Watching DVDs from a Cloud on the iPad3?

Is it possible to watch DVDs on the iPad 3 if they are stored on a cloud?

If so, which cloud would be best for this?

It will only be for occasional viewing so not a heavy user.

I have tried using Air Video - but this limits me to have to leave my main computer on which I don't want to do whilst I am out.

thank you

Are you talking out and about on the road ?

What sort of connection will you have available, are you using wifi or 3G ?

It will be on a wi fi connection. The intention is to be able to take the iPad on holiday and just tap into my DVDs via online storage?

Is this do'able?

My advice would be to get a cheap NAS and use Air Video to stream from it.

What you say is possible but uploading all those DVDs is slow and the cost of online storage is rather high for the capacity you would need.

Wouldn't it be easier to just subscribe to an online movie streaming service such as LoveFilm or Netflix? It's not very costly and most have a trial period. This is assuming you're not paying per GB for internet access on holiday, as streaming video uses a lot of data.

Thanks for the replies. It's just an idea at the moment but maybe not such a good one.

I have not ripped the DVDs yet - it would probably be no more than half a dozen films so the Netflix idea may be worth looking at.

As i said it was only for holiday - one of our group is recovering from illness and will need to rest daily, probably at the hotel, so it was mainly for him.

Re. the suggestion about a NAS - it sounds like it may be the answer and could of course be used again. But as I'm not a techie about this sort of thing - am I right in thinking this is a sort of hard drive to store ripped DVDs - which could then be taken anywhere and accessed via the Air Video - but using an iPad?

(Sorry to be thick!)

thank you

It would be far easier to take a stack of DVDs and a laptop with you IMHO.

A months free trial with Netflix would be a good idea.

you could use something like apple time capsule I would have thought which I believe is a wireless NAS device.

Also hotel wireless may be speed and download limited thus would be no good for lots of online video streaming anyway.

If you're only talking six or so films, is it not possible to just rip them and store them directly on the iPad? That's what I do with my (generic tablet device) to take on the plane or watch in the hotel etc.

You make a valid point, you will easily get 6 DVDs on the iPad, probably only take up around 4GB once compressed.

Or rent or buy the films from iTunes. This is what I do on the odd time I want to take films with me on my iPad.
