1. BBC Commissioning has released tender details of the new all-local radio evening programme, which is set to start on January 7th 2013. The speech-led show, to be broadcast on all 39 local radio stations in England, will air from 7pm till 10pm. Applications are invited from all independent production companies who can clearly demonstrate relevant experience and expertise, the BBC says. All offers should reach them by 12 noon on August 23rd 2012, with decisions made by September 14th More.

2. Radio freelancers will for the first time be eligible for up to £1,500 worth of funding for training from the BBC and Creative Skillset. Experienced freelancers will be able to use the funds to pay for 80% of their training costs (up to the £1,500 maximum) for courses in areas that have been identified by a panel as priorities for the industry. Funding is available for courses that cover craft & technical skills including editing, social media, multiplatform content development and distribution and sound engineering, or business, teamwork and management skills. More

3. Plans to extend local digital radio coverage moved a step closer today as Government, the BBC and commercial operators signed a joint agreement, establishing the framework for up to £21 million of new investment in radio infrastructure. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishes an agreement in principle to fund the build-out of local DAB to FM equivalences over the next 5 years, with a commitment to consider further funding if necessary. The MoU also means at least five new local multiplexes, including in Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire, will be launched within 18 months. In addition, the MoU confirms the Government’s commitment to a decision on radio switchover in 2013. More

4. Radioplayer is to open up its service to non-Ofcom licensed stations, but initially only 30 slots are being offered. Any stations interested in joining – for a fee – can fill out an application for review. The online player currently features over 300 Ofcom licensed live stations, 15,000 on-demand items, and attracts 7 million regular listeners. More

1. Mark Thompson from the BBC writes; It's a big day for BBC Sport. The fact that we've won exclusive broadcast and digital rights to the next four Olympic Games - two winter and two summer games - means not just that Olympic action will be on the BBC into the 2020s, but that we have secured one of the last pieces in a portfolio of strategic sports rights which ensure that the BBC remains the UK's most popular sports broadcaster well beyond the present Royal Charter. Full Details

2. NOW TV has launched, the brand new internet TV service from Sky, is about to give millions more people an easy and commitment-free way to enjoy amazing movies, instantly. From tomorrow, NOW TV will open up more choice for consumers by making Sky Movies – followed later this year by Sky Sports - available across a wide range of internet-connected devices. Building on the increasing popularity of watching TV over the internet, NOW TV will offer access to Sky Movies – the UK’s most popular subscription movies service – in a new way. It is easy, flexible and great value – with no contract, set-up costs or installation. More

3. The Viacom18 and TV18 distribution entity, IndiaCast – the group behind Colors, is expected to launch a free UK channel in the coming weeks. While the channel’s details are not yet known – BizAsia understands that it will primarily be used as a free window to promote premium properties from Colors, as well as broadcast content from its news channels CNN-IBN, CNBC-TV18 and regional shows from its recently acquired Eeanadu network. The channel is likely to be positioned as a hybrid service like ZEE Cafe. Interestingly, if this goes ahead, then Govind Shahi who is spearheading Colors UK/Europe was also behind the launch of ZEE Cafe during his tenure at the network. More

4. TV advertising is facing a chilly final quarter after it emerged that spending in the key month of September is likely to be down by about 5%, which could set the scene for total television ad spend to shrink across all 2012. September – traditionally the third-biggest TV advertising month of the year, bringing in revenues close to £400m – is considered to be a critical bellwether of the likely health of the market in the key months leading up to Christmas. Broadcasters and media buyers have been paying even more attention than usual to early ad bookings in September, after a summer slump is set to see TV ad spend fall by about 10% in July and the same again in August. The theory was that many advertisers had chosen to hold back spending during the London 2012 Olympics – where television viewing would be dominated by the BBC's coverage – prompting the hope that marketers were going to pump money in from September. 5. A botnet responsible for nearly a fifth of the world's spam email has been taken offline. The botnet known as Grum took cyber warriors three days to take offline by battling servers based in Russia, Panama and the Netherlands. "I am glad to announce that, after three days of effort, the Grum botnet has finally been knocked down. All the known command and control (CnC) servers are dead, leaving their zombies orphaned," wrote researcher Atif Mushtaq for FireEye Intelligence Lab. More

6. More channels broadcast and even more hours consumed, more alternatives and more use of catch-up and connected TV, but the UK TV industry is still very much dominated by the TV set in the living room Ofcom’s ninth annual Communications Market report has revealed. Moreover the total value of the TV advertising market has not only returned to, but now exceeds (in nominal terms) levels seen before the economic downturn. The survey by the UK’s broadcast and telecoms regulator found that in all viewers watched an average of four hours per day in 2011, up from 3.7 hours in 2004, and slightly down on the figure posted in 2010. During 2011, 515 channels were broadcast, five more than in the previous twelve months and, showing exactly how rapidly UK TV is growing, almost a hundred more than in 2005. More

7. Samsung, LG and Sony do not wish to work with the adult business for the moment, according to one provider of such entertainment. The news comes at the time that the first adult smart TV apps are appearing on connected sets. Marc Dorcel launched the first adult smart TV app last summer with Panasonic and just recently, Philips announced the arrival of adult apps from Hustler and Private. More.

8. Comcast, the company that owns NBC News, has taken full ownership of online news network MSNBC.com, which will now be named NBCNews.com. The dissolution of the joint venture was announced on late Sunday, on the day the news service was celebrating its 16th birthday. The financial details of the breakup were not disclosed. Microsoft is set to launch its own news operation later this year on its Web portal, MSN.com. More.

    9. UKTV has become the fastest growing television network, according to data from audience researcher BARB, released by the broadcaster. The network, jointly owned by BBC Worldwide and Scripps Networks International, has increased its share of viewing by more than the other British terrestrial and digital TV networks combined. The network averaged a 4.41% share of viewing, up 14% on the same period last year. Commercial, adult impacts rose by 14.5% across the same period. In June, UKTV achieved its highest ever share of commercial impacts (SOCI) at 8.44%. More.

    10. UKTV’s free-to-air factual channel Yesterday is shifting focus to offer more entertainment-led content and has unveiled a rebrand and three new series. The design refresh, which launches on 24 July, will include a new logo and idents and is part of Yesterday’s strategy to deliver “entertainment inspired by history” in order to attract a more diverse, younger audience. The channel is keen to build on the success of style doc Cilla’s Unswung Sixties, which drew a consolidated audience of 430,000 in March, a record for an original commission. More

Ofcom has received 19 applications for community radio licences in Scotland under the third phase of community radio licensing.
Applications had to be in to the regulator by the middle of February, and will now be considered by the body’s licensing committee.
Applicants include Celtic Music Radio, who already run on medium wave and as a pop-up service on DAB but were after an FM licence,
including online stations Generate Radio and TD1 Radio More

Apparently not, is it because the BBC do not have a licence to show them in Ireland?

What Olympic Games channels are showing in the Republic of Ireland?

You won't be able to access the extra 24 live channels as the BBC is not the official broadcaster for this region.

Sky+HD RTÉ 2HD (channel 102 on the Sky TV listings) will show a wide range of exciting programmes including the Olympic Games this summer. If you're in the Republic of Ireland you can also access the Olympic Games channels by pressing the red button while watching the standard BBC channels (BBC1, BBC3, BBC One HD and BBC HD).

    From here - http://www.sky.com/helpcentre/tv/your-tv-channels-extras/olympics/

You will get Channel 4's extra three channels for the Paralympics however.

The BBC Olympic channels have also been added to the Sky+ app allowing you to remote record.

So, the BBC Olympics channels are on the EPG. Great, only problem is they are trying to ruin viewing with a ridiculously large and bright DOG? BBC, are your serious? Who is the best person to email at the BBC to express my sentiments?

Agreed, that DOG is too big. Why do they need the BBC Sport logo at all? Just the BBC logo and rings will suffice, and make it more transparent like the BBC HD and BBC One HD logos.

I think you can contact them via http://goo.gl/Njmz8

    I sent mine .....
The 24 BBC Olympic channels have just appeared on my Sky TV. I am devastated to see you have placed a large DOG in the corner of the screen, reading "BBC SPORT" plus the Olympic Rings. Talk about grabbing defeat from the jaws of victory! The creation of these channels is a magnificent achievement for the BBC but it now looks as if you are going to ruin it ... the only DOGs we want to see are the timers on the events and the competitors names and results when appropriate. It is a matter of record that the BBC won the rights to screen the Olympics. Everyone knows that. You don't need to tell us again.
The games have not started yet, it is not too late to review this terrible decision. Please, please think again.

This sounds familar to the BBC HD logo, when it launched it was huge and finally went down to a smaller transparent size at full launch, perhaps it will do the same on Friday
