So what will we see in 20 years?

We have already had the Jazz and classical age, the rock n roll age (50's 60's) the rock, metal and glam rock age (70's 80's) the pop age (early 90's)the country age (late 90's) the dance age (early 00's) the R&B age (late 00's) and now we are in the dubstep age.

But whats next?

If you look at music as a whole over the years it does go in cycles. In the 70's, 90's and mid 00's rock became popular (T Rex, Oasis, the hoosiers)

I wonder if theres a new type of "sound" we haven't heard yet. It perplexes my brain.

I still don't know what the hell dubstep is.

I want to see hard rock make a come back. We just need one great album by one great band to get huge commercial success and it will go from there

Madonna will still be flashing her boobs on yet another sell out world tour and people will still be saying she needs to put them away

I'm not sure anything new can be created, it seems as if everything that could be done has been done.
But we'll see.

HAHAHAHA!

So true. People HATE she took on the music industry...AND WON.

Back to topic-what an interesting question! Music in twenty years time will have samples from now but people won't have heard from them. Then a golden oldies Internet radio station will play the original (let's say Rihanna) and the future people will all think, 'Urgh, I prefer this 2032 version'.

Regards,

Cos.

There's a new type of music that's emerged from the streets of America where people talk over the music and the rhythm. It's known as "rap" music and I definitely think we'll be listening to "rap" music in 20 years time.

sadly i think you are right.

i cant see any new sound being created, so maybe just cyclical re-hashes of retro styles will be popular.

and now we are in the dubstep age.
I'm sorry, but we're really not. It's a silly little fad thing that is inconsequential and won't even be remembered.

That is true, but dubstep is really a crap offshoot genre of dance. And there's been hundreds of those over the last 20 years, most of which will have been forgotten.

It really hasn't had much impact in the way that, say, Punk, or House, or Disco or Indie, has had.

As for music in 20 years...much like now, it will be mainly rehashes of what's gone before.

"The dubstep age"?? Really??? Dubstep has been around since the 90s, it's old hat, as old as a hat can be. There doesn't seem to be a defining 'sound' that you could label for today, probably because the music scene is far more fragmented, and if a new genre does emerge it's unlikely to dominate or define the scene(s) as it will quickly be assimilated or broken down into ever smaller sub-genres.

How can you call the current music trend as anything but dance? Dance music is absoutely huge at the moment. But not like 'proper' dance music, I mean the pop-dance music that is all over the charts.

So many songs follow the same formula now. [Verse - Vocal chorus with build up - drop - dance instrumental break/chorus] - eg. We Found Love, Where Have You Been, Titanium, Laserlight, all songs by Calvin Harris, David Guetta, Example etc, Starships, Pound The Alarm, Party Rock Anthem... the list is endless).

Dubstep is kind of a sub-genre which is present subtly in a few songs (eg. You Da One by Rihanna, Hold It Against Me by Britney, Good Feeling by Flo Rida...) but pure-dubstep tracks are far from the mainstream, and certainly not the defining genre of our era.

It's all about dance!

The market will have continued to fragment, so music will inevitably be more cheaply produced than it is now, of a lower quality, and with lesser sales.

TV will be even worse though.

I agree, this isn't the dubstep age. We're in some sort of dance-pop/electropop/europop thing at the moment (really 2006-onwards, following on from crunk, but I think it's dieing down now). Similar to the late 90's or the 80's (ABBA, Ace of Base, etc.).

There's a new type of music that's emerged from the streets of America where people talk over the music and the rhythm. It's known as "rap" music and I definitely think we'll be listening to "rap" music in 20 years time.
Rapping has been a big part of mainstream music for like 30 years now. Yes, it probably will still be around in 20 years, so will singing.

We're in the dubstep age? I only know a handful of people who actually like dubstep, everyone else just thinks it's bland and faceless.

Well, according to most people it's the apocalypse at the end of the year. So music in 20 years time will probably be a load of people chanting around a makeshift fire whilst sharpening flint tools.

Seriously I actually have no idea. I think every decade has had good music as well as utter tripe. One thing is for sure is that we won't see a return to those fun days when we purchased music on a vinyl record or a nice music cassette. . . Shame!

The problem is that the music industry is now just that...an industry.

Theres plenty of underground stuff, but the days of mass youth movements breaking out into the mainstream seems to be over.

In a way this is the power of the individual, where you can choose what you want to listen to, what you wear, play, go etc all at the time at the click of the button on the computer.

Theres no effort invovled in it..
