Av reciever just out of warranty.

Hi all just thought i would post my Av prob to see if anyone else has any luck with products just out of warranty been 2yrs.
Its a 2yr & 4month old Onkyo Av receiver model tx-nr 807 almost £600 no sound on anolog or digital, would i have any luck protesting & saying it should last a lot longer than it has and they should repair it free of charge.? Just wanting some honest advise on my options & if anyone else has had a similar and luck with getting things fixed just out of warranty.

Cheers

First thing. Go through the settings on the beast and double check that each source select button you use still has the correct audio input assigned to it. It is possible it has glitched and lost those settings.

If they are OK move round to the back of the amp. Take a good careful look at all the speaker connections. Depending on how you have connected the cables there may be stray strands of copper loose. If a +ve and -ve touch then that will activate the protection circuits. And believe me it can be fiendishly difficult to see this sort of thing sometimes. Best thing is to take all the wires off and remake the terminations being extra careful to do them neatly.

Also carefully check the terminations on the speakers for shorts as well. Not to mention checking the full length of the cables for any damage.

Only once you have eliminated any possibility of an external fault or configuration error should you look at a repair. However I would doubt you would get a free repair.

Check the instructions carefully for a cpu reset procedure.

Had to reset my Denon AV amp roughly twice in it's 10 yr history.

As it's well over 12 months old, you've little chance of the retailer paying to have it repaired for you - but you do have rights under the sale of goods act to take the retailer to court for a possible percentage of the repair costs, assuming you can prove in court it's a manufacturing defect.

Hi guys thanks for your replies, I have done the factory reset twice & so had Richer Sounds it works after that & then once the amp has cooled it no longer works again, richer sounds said it would have to go off to Onkyo for repairs.

I have been reading the internet the last few days and it seems to be a common problem with this unit, do I have any re-coarse on a unit that has a problem with it before it is even sold off the shelf ? as a lot of these unit have developed the same vault.

cheers

If the fault is common it makes your case under SOGA that much easier to prove.

Given that the warranty period in Continental Europe is two years, and this is under two years old, it may be worth speaking to Onkyo directly -- when I had a 20 month old Toshiba RDXS32 DVD/HDD recorder which had a common fault with the DVD drives failing, Tosh were quite happy to replace the offending drive for free even though the warranty was lapsed.

The drive failed again (and I replaced it myself with a compatible LG unit which is happily working in there to this day), but that isn't the point.

Put your case directly to Onkyo with evidence this is a common problem. If you have no luck get in touch with Gen Serve, they are the approved Onkyo repair centre, they even do courier collection/delivery and will even discuss prices over the phone. Just have to weigh up the price for fixing against a new receiver.

Ah well.

Still, if it's a common fault, many manufacturers will be willing to help even slightly after the EU warranty period.

Even if it's just a case of meeting the OP half-way it's probably still worth doing.

If it's a common failure Richer Sounds should fix it under the SOGA regs. Surprised they haven't offered they are normally more than reasonable.

Hi again & thanks for your replies, I have now informed Richer Sounds that I have discovered it is a common problem with this unit across Europe & the US, they have advised me to wait until they hear what the problem is before speaking to Onkyo which for them is just been sensible I guess even though I know the problem is exactly the same as the others described on the US & other forums so I'll wait for now, some people in the USA have been getting it fix for free after their warranty period has run out so here's hoping the UK/Europe will as well.
As the unit was about £600 it would probably be worth fixing if it was up to £200 anyway I just don’t want to pay for it personally. When I rang Richer Sounds they were helpful & have also offered to lend me an AV receiver until mine is repaired.

Cheers

Just be mindfull that if you go direct to Onkyo for further assistance you've sidestepped Richer Sounds from whom your original purchase ('contract') was with and that may mean that if Onkyo don't help and you go back to Richer Sounds using the SOGA then they might have a get out, as you didn't involve them to start with.

hope that makes sense?!

edit, in simple terms : SOGA is between you and Richer Sounds, not Onkyo.

Yep thanks for that I'll just chat with Richer Sounds then.
