UPDATE:

People who know me on the boards know that I can usually be trusted in the matters of Spice and I don't mean to alarm you but I do believe that this is going to be confirmed shortly.

Well, put it this way, I have heard from an extremely reliable source that all five have now officially agreed.

Just sit tight. Exciting!

Bunch of hasbeens in musical terms. Girls Aloud would be a much, much better choice. How can these millionaire women presume to represent Britain's youth and adults, the majority of whom are poor and tightening their belts? Two of them don't even live in Britain.

The Spice Girls have never been as pro-female as they claim. What've they ever done other than shout Girl Power while stuffing their purses with as much money as they can while claiming royalties from all sorts of naff product.

Mel C is the only one I have any time for, the only one who really believes in music and has always made it her career. The rest are just showbiz sl*ts who'll do anything for money and for their time in the gossip mags.

Think Live8 , best part, Floyd & The Who, just add say The Stones , maybe PSB / Pandemonium live & we'd be talking.

Always the same, everything aimed at the brain dead , lowest common denominator.

You make it sound like a threat!

Given the heavy handed tactics of LOCOG and the sponsorship stazi, threatening people with a Spice Girls performance is to be expected!

As a so-called 'group' they look jaded and past it. They probably don't want to even be in the same room together, but they'll grab at anything if it means money and publicity.

I don't think the Olympics is the occasion to be wheeling out 1990s girl groups who have had their time. God forbid if they actually start 'singing'.

The Spice Girls ARE the greatest export since the Beatles. FACT. 75 MILLION albums sold.

They are MORE than worthy of their slot at the closing ceremony.

If only they could get Girls Aloud too!

This is great news, loved the Spice Girls whne I was little. Agree that Spice Up Your Life would be a great choice, although Viva Forever would be arguably more fitting because of the musical. Wanna has to be performed of course! Their best song!

Very happy they're performing, they deserved to get a acknowledged. They did change the music industry and the perception of girl bands and they also embodied girl power.

I for one am excited for this

This line gets used every time there is a thread about the Spice Girls.

That famous fast food franchise with a big M sells massively around the world, and is probably the most successful - doesn't mean it's good for you though.

The Spice Girls are very well known and have sold millions of records worldwide, it wouldn't be right to not include them in the Olympics.

It's a shame we're running out of world known singers and have to resort to a pop group who were aimed at the pre-teen and teenage market in the 90s. It's not that long ago they had their comeback, thankfully they never did the Diamond Jubilee, but they were at the Golden Jubilee. Not sure if you think they should be part of an established few singers who seem to get in on everything, but I don't think many want that.

Will not be watching then, probably a relief as the whole thing is bound to be ghastly.

People can talk about how much they sold back in the 90s, but unlike the Stones and the Beatles how much does their back catalog sell now?

Not a lot because their music was perfunctory forgettable pop.

TBH the entire "if you don't like them, don't listen", is perfectly fair, but this concert is about Greatr Britain, and as tax-payers we're all giving them cash, so I think we've every right to complain.

I'd prefer B*witched, they were less rubbish.

We're not though are we, Adele for instance. Surely M.I.A also, means more on a global stage now, and wouldn't be a complete embarrassment.

Why not having The Singing Kettle also?

At least they are still performing in 2012.

Okay, my last post on the subject, coz I just listened to that, and I thought it was horrid, clearly you disagree vehemently, so we probably aren't going to agree.

This.

If any of them shout 'Girl Power' or do a V sign, I swear I'll throw my tv out of the window

I think The Rolling Stones, The Who, Pink Floyd and about 40 other bands might have something to say about that.

Spice Girls? Bunch of talentless bints sold to people with no brain cells

They deserve it more than any other Britishmusic act of the last 20 years imo. True pop icons - brought a lot of money to the UK in their prime too! And they were part of what made Britain "cool" again in the 90's. Definitely deserved.

I just dont think they should sing "Wannabe". It should be "Spice Up Your Life" & Viva Forever.

For those saying Girls Aloud should be included... Apart from the fact that they arent even a 10th as successful as the Sg's were, nobody outside the UK & Ireland knows them. So no they shouldn't.

I heard that they're only doing it because Bucks Fizz pulled out.
