That isn't anywhere near close to the minimum wage. Can that be right.

But they are getting food, accomodation & electricity etc. thrown in, that's good money.

It may have been in BB6 - I understood that they got a retainer which was quite low. I think the idea is that it is low enough not to be considered payment for being there, but high enough to cover out of pocket expenses for being there. Some of them will not be earning anything while they are there but will still have to pay rent etc., on their homes.

I've also heard it said that only those HMs with a mortgage get the thirty quid a day - and the rest get nothing.

Can anyone confirm that?

Some will still have homes and families and jobs they have put on hold or have given up.

Seems a bit harsh. I'm all up for starving them, shocking them and punishing them when they are in the house but do we really chuck some of them out in a position where they are penniless and homeless afterwards too?

I have a vague memory, from the time of the first three series, of some one posting on a forum that they got paid the equivalent of their wages if they had a job, or a flat rate if they were unemployed or a student. Although, I can't remember if this was ever confirmed.

If you knew that were likely to happen, one would think you wouldn't go into the house in the first place. It's the housemates' responsibility to assess the risks in their own lives. They must all know by now that getting rich and famous off the back of BB is very rare these days.

I'm guessing that is the reason why there are more very young housemates who maybe live at home or who are at Uni and on thier summer break.

10 weeks is a long time to be away from work or from a young family if they have children.
