Which GTA shall I buy?

I am a complete newbie to the GTA games (well at least on the ps3). And I quite fancy playing it sometime, but which shall I get first?. Is there a set order?. Also I want one that lasts quite a long while. Any ideas?

All of them have a good amount of content and there's only 1 full GTA game out on PS3 i.e. IV with V arriving in the next few months.

2 side story games were released after GTA IV using the same setting and released on disc as "Episodes from Liberty City"; they are meant to be good too.

It's possible to buy a complete copy with GTA IV and the side stories. You might want to also try Red Dead Redemption as an alternative to open world game.

I've tried GTA and I'm not that a big fan because I don't like the action mechanics i.e. fighting or shooting so I'm looking forward to a game called Sleeping Dogs that appears to executed that better.

The Ballad of Gay Tony is my favourite one of this generation. I found GTA IV, although a great game, to be too serious. TBoGT is really fun to play with good humour

Thanks for the info. Imay get The complete edition sometime, as it has GTA IV and Legends of Liberty City , and Ballad of Gay Tony all on one disc

I know a lot of people were underwhelmed with GTA IV, particularly those that had played San Andreas and Vice City beforehand, but personally, I adore IV, and the associated episodes. With all the challenges within the game, it kept me going for a very long time. Definitely good value for money, particularly for what you'll be able to pick it up for these days.

I've enjoyed every version thoroughly bar GTA Advance. As you're new to it I'd imagine going back to the GTA 3 series might be a bit too far a step backwards, so I'd echo those saying to get the GTA IV + episodes pack.

Regardless of your choice, you have to play San Andreas one day, somehow.

I'd get all of them not just for this gen.

I didn't like 1,2 or London for PS1. Really kicked in for me on PS2.

Start with 3. It's set in a smaller Liberty City and set just after San Andreas, about '95.

Vice City is next. A trip back to the '80s. Best music of all the games so far. Loosely based on the '80s version of Scarface with a bit of Carlitos Way thrown in.
Vice City Stories can accompany it if you wish. A standalone add on.

San Andreas after that. Set in early '90s and based around the gangs of LA. Some good tunes and the best humour of the series.

GTA IV. Set in modern day Liberty City. Awesome skyline. A bit annoying with the constant interruptions from your phone. Some funny stuff, especially Repbulican Space Marines on the TV.

Liberty City Stories is last with two standalone games on one disc. Ballad of Gay Tony and Lost & Damned. Both stories happen simultaneously with events from GTA IV and occasionally overlap which is a nice touch.

Although I personally thought IV was the worst of the bunch it's still a good game and worth the hours you can put into it.

GTA3 was set in modern day, so in the chronology that'd be 2001.

Just to correct there:

Grand Theft Auto III - 2001
Vice City - 1986
San Andreas - 1992
Liberty City Stories - 1998
Vice City Stories - 1984

Grand Theft Auto IV - 2008
EPISODES FROM LIBERTY CITY - 2008 (same time as GTA IV)

A lot of people seem to get easily confused with the names, Liberty City Stories is the prequel to GTA 3 that was released on the PSP and then the PS2. EPISODES FROM LIBERTY CITY is the expansion pack for GTA IV which bundles the two DLC, The Lost And Damned & The Ballad of Gay Tony, onto a Single Disc.

GTA IV: The Complete Edition is a pack which contains GTA IV and EPISODES FROM LIBERTY CITY.

I always thought it was mid '90s

In SA, Catalina and The Mute go off to Liberty City together after the race and he turns out to be the main character in 3 (Claude)

It has been a while so brain is old.

The only GTA I didn't like was Chinatown Wars on the PSP.

CD93 said what I was thinking. IF you don't somehow play san andreas you would be nuts not to basically

I bought the complete edition from Amazon the other day GTA 4 does take itself way to serious but im looking forward to Gay Tony, but id start on Gta3, then Vice City, San Andreas then Gta 4 complete edition. I would deffo play Vice, and San andreas (the best in the series imo followed very closely by Vice City) but I would play them before 4 as going back to them after GTA 4 makes them look really dated

I'd love a HD remake of the PS2 GTA trilogy with trophies, custom soundtracks and multiplayer. It would be guaranteed to sell well, so maybe it's something Rockstar should consider doing.

Not on the cards. But GTA3 and Vice City are to be released on PSN via PS2 Classics (Emulation) later in the year.

Ballad of gay Tony is worth a play through I would also recommend PS2 San Andreas if your PS3 is backward compatible.

That's missing Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories, the PSP games which were later ported to PS2. They're OK. Not brilliant in my opinion.

Why not San Andreas as well?

Compatibility issues, but San Andreas is already available over Xbox Live under the Games on Demand section.

Ironic enough, GTA3 and Vice City are currently not available on Xbox Live due to Compatibility issues!
