MUSIC CORNER:- Unsigned/Independent Artists (Discussion Thread)
Hello guys, I thought I would set this thread up, as I believe Independent artists are not getting the recognition they deserve in this industry. Within this thread posters can post their favourite independent/unsigned artists with their songs, videos etc, in order to help them gain a wider fanbase. It would be nice if you have an artist that you are passionate about, to post links to itunes if they have any songs to download etc. It is a good way to help support them
 Okay I will post some of my favourites now, to get the thread started. Mayflys Mayflys are fronted by french born Aurelie Konter, whose voice, shaped by her travels around the world, gives Mayflys one of their unique sounds. With roots in differing genres, Mayflys' feel-good and catchy songs appeal to the ears of pop, dance and soul fans alike. Following the success of their first self produced EP, Mayflys are releasing their debut album along with a home made animation for Spring. The band spawned from Mayfly Trio, an acoustic act which released an album in 2010. Since then, Mayflys have developed their sound to suit their new line up and combined with their friendly & humble approach are gaining more followers and friends with every outing. Their increasing reputation in the London and Bristol area has seen them perform at Ronnie Scotts, The Halfmoon and the 2000 Trees Festival. Bio:- Are a group from the UK that combine soul with elements of rock, hip hop, and modern bass culture. Fronted by Thabo, the group also features a live horn section, electric guitar, bass, and drums. Formed from an exclusive after-hours jam club, Extra Curricular have been pushing their unique brand of soul-driven music on the UK underground live circuit since early 2009. The EC live show is something to be witnessed; Thabo's captivating voice and presence guides the listener through a sound that can one minute be full of raging horns, fuzzed out guitar, and bouncing bass and then, in the next, be electronica-tinged soul music to pull the heartstrings. Fittingly, in February 2011 Extra Curricular began working with the genre-defying DJ superstar Doorly, and in June 2012 the band will put out their latest single on his label Pigeonhole This! One of the most interesting things about Extra Curricular is that they never intentionally set out to be a ‘band’. The group of six were brought together through a mutual respect of their work in other bands and an after hours ‘extra curricular’ jam club started up. These behind-closed-doors sessions allowed for music making in its purest sense to take place without the trappings of genre, sales, or marketing strategies diluting the heady mix of music the group now found themselves creating. The lure of some free studio time eventually saw some of this music recorded for the outside world to hear and, after an incredible initial response, some exclusive club shows booked. Any thoughts of leaving it at that soon faded when the curtains came down for the first time; an evolution had occurred and the ‘extra curricular’ of before became ‘Extra Curricular’. It’s these roots that make Extra Curricular such a unique proposition. These days, manufactured acts in every genre and no money for artist development are the running themes of the music industry. A group of genuinely talented individuals allowed to develop into a band like Extra Curricular is a rare thing, and that’s what the group are. The EC mantra goes beyond the novelties of instrumentation; this is real music without limits – anyone who has listened to their music or been to a show will testify to this effect. In their time together Extra Curricular have played alongside Example, Zane Lowe, Doorly, Artwork, Youngblood Brass Band, and Craig Charles. They have received airplay from BBC 1EXTRA, Rinse FM, BBC6 Music, BBC Leeds, LSRadio (Leeds), and ICRadio (London). Extra Curricular have also played at many great venues and festivals up and down the country including: Manchester Academy, The Afterparty Warehouse, Brixton Mass, Greenman Festival, Limetree Festival, and Greenbelt Festival. Artist:-Kal Lavelle
Bio:- Kal Lavelle is an Irish born singer songwriter now living in London. Her songs are instantly captivating, with a voice that Alex Zane (Channel 4) praised as simply "beautiful". Kal began playing guitar after winning a thousand pounds in a Mars Bar when she was 10 yrs old. With the money, she bought her mother a washing machine and for herself, her very first guitar. Her single 'Breakfast At Tiffanys' was recently chosen as 'Single of the Week' on iTunes, which in turn, saw her debut EP ‘Shivers’ climb to #5 in the iTunes Singer/Songwriter album chart. The iTunes US & Japanese stores also featured her in the 'New & Noteworthy' section. Three of her tracks have featured on Tom Robinson's BBC RADIO 6 show & her song 'Downstairs' was selected for the BBC Introducing Podcast. She was recently asked as a special guest on the show, which was broadcast Nationwide. Artful (Dodger's) Mark Hill was so impressed by Kal's vocals, he asked her to feature on his track 'Could Just Be The Bassline' - the first single from his new album. The track featured on Music Week's prestigious 'Playlist', was Dj MistaJam's (Radio 1 & Radio 1xtra) 'Jam Hot record of the week' & was playlisted on Radio 1xtra. (With the video on rotation on MTV.) Kal spent last year supporting her friend & chart topper Ed Sheeran (Atlantic Records) on his sold out UK tour and also supported him in her native Ireland, which was a special highlight. On the 1st of January 2012, The Sunday Mirror (UK National Newspaper) listed Kal in the top 5 'Hot for 2012' ones to watch list.
