it's about how the leather runs smooth on the passenger seat so there's no need to pamper life's complexity

ok, iv'e no idea what its about.... but i know nobody writes lyrics like that anymore

btw the "jumped up pantry boy" is a quote from here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SoXPfqtXKig

Having just re-read the lyrics in a long time it's about a young man being picked up... and being charmed about a man... and the older man telling the younger man to 'return the ring' as he clearly isn't into women

Good song, I especially like the bass line even if it isn't too fancy

Brilliant song, brilliant group, but no idea. I don't do meanings. I don't care about lyrics. It is the overall sound for me.

Great song.Sadly sung by a man who couldn't carry a tune in a bucket.

Great song and I think skunkboy69' comment about Morrisey is a bit off.

When I 1st heard the Smiths I didn't "get" Morrisey either, however as time went by I did. I actually think his voice, and more importantly lyrical content, makes the tunes.

Take Heaven Knows I'm Miserable now. If you take Morrisey off it, its actually a really upbeat party song that would have done any happy 80's popster proud. What I love is how Morrisey takes that, thinks "mmmm party song," and then writes these utterly perverse lyrics about how unhappy he is and how everything is so shallow & horrible & not worth it. Its the ulitamate piss take of what the 80's were at that time. Not that I mind the 80's, I just like Morrisey's twist on it too.

It so shouldn't work, but it just does, and the irony is it makes the song more memorable because of that. Really, Morrisey and Marr needed each other so badly to be great as they were both total opposites and that clash made the music good. Although I wouldn't say their individual work has been all bad, they never had the power they had together in The Smiths.
