Not really, and I think it's because no one in the UK can really...relate to it. There's a lot of areas in America where country thrives, and I'm not just talking about the music genre. There just isn't any of that here.

because country music is strictly american and has no chance of crossing over like hip hop and rnb. it has a small buzz in australia, but country music is one of those things that will always be american. it's a niche market

taylor swift does not count. she may write like a country music artist, but her music is all pop with country influences. it's like how nicki minaj has been making nothing but pop records, but it's still called hip hop. they always say that starships song is urban, but it isnt even close. most of her stuff since she has been mainstream is just pop. taylor swift is no different.

Yeah that's been out for years but it's only gathered AirPlay in the UK since Cheryl cole butchered it at the jubilee concert.

I like the Pistol Annies, they've had no success in the UK.

I think over time it will get better, especially with more pop-country crossovers, but I doubt it will ever be like how it is in America.

Don`t come some of the best Country (Folk) Music of the last four years from England(Mumford, Marling, MacDonald etc.)?

Why should Gr. Britain look for America?

It was big in the seventies over here, but you'd be hard pressed to find anyone under 40 who likes it. It's a shame as some country music is really good.

I love Sugarland, Lady Antebellum, Band Perry, Martina McBride, Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood etc

I love country music, and all music where a story gets told across a song, which is what a lot of Country does.

Radio 2 play country. Lady Antebellum are a staple of their play list) and they have a specialist weekly country programme and cover the country music awards. Heaven knows why... the genre is laughed at even in its own country.

Folk isn't Country.
Country is a part of Folk, at least for wiki:

American traditional music is also called roots music. Roots music is a broad category of music including bluegrass, country music, gospel, old time music, jug bands, Appalachian folk, blues, Cajun and Native American music. The music is considered American either because it is native to the United States or because it developed there, out of foreign origins, to such a degree that it struck musicologists as something distinctly new. It is considered "roots music" because it served as the basis of music later developed in the United States, including rock and roll, contemporary folk music, rhythm and blues, and jazz.

Lady Antebellum and Train have both been in the UK top 20 singles chart for a while now and i am sure they're both country acts...also Taylor Swift was huge here with 'Love Story' and in the past Leann Rimes, Shania Twain have been pretty successful...

Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis all made some of my favourite country music. Interestingly they all started out as rockabilly/rock and roll acts!

No it's not and that paragraph doesn't say it is either. It puts them both in "roots music" which is a broad term covering many genres.

My bad, here is the correct quote:

American folk music is a musical term that encompasses numerous genres, many of which are known as traditional music, traditional folk music, contemporary folk music or roots music. Roots music is a broad category of music including bluegrass, country music, gospel, old time music, jug bands, Appalachian folk, blues, Cajun and Native American music. The music is considered American either because it is native to the United States or because it developed there, out of foreign origins, to such a degree that it struck musicologists as something distinctly new. as an american i can tell you that country is not folk. that's like saying bluegrass is folk music. bob dylan was folk, blake shelton and shania twain are country

Carrie Underwood got to number 11 in the album charts recently which I thought was amazing.

That Lady A song has been kicking around the charts for ages. (though it's hardly a real Country sounding song)

There is no reason why Modern Country can't do well over here though, even someone like Mirana Lambert who I class as proper twangy Country.

It's just the stereotype needs to be knocked on the head. As soon as country is mentioned people in this country automatically think the following:-

Country and Western !!
Yeaa-haa !!
Cowboys !!
Dolly Parton

The modern stuff is very pop sounding. The music videos are very trendy and full of beautiful looking people. It's a far-cry from the old country stereotypes. If people and the media got over the stereotyping and opened their eyes I think it would do well.

A good song is a good song regardless of genre.

those are just country-pop crossovers. one country artist that is really popular in the us that hasnt conformed to the pop crossover is Miranda Lambert. here, you know a song is country if it only gets played on country music stations and the country music channel. as soon as you get mtv play and commercial radio play, it's only because you have pop elements. people like miranda lambert, blake shelton, and tim mcgraw will almost never get any commercial play unless they include pop sounds. even without play, country music has almost a cult like following, especially in the south
