Not really, and I think it's because no one in the UK can really...relate to it. There's a lot of areas in America where country thrives, and I'm not just talking about the music genre. There just isn't any of that here.

because country music is strictly american and has no chance of crossing over like hip hop and rnb. it has a small buzz in australia, but country music is one of those things that will always be american. it's a niche market

I like the Pistol Annies, they've had no success in the UK. |

I think over time it will get better, especially with more pop-country crossovers, but I doubt it will ever be like how it is in America.

Don`t come some of the best Country (Folk) Music of the last four years from England(Mumford, Marling, MacDonald etc.)?
Why should Gr. Britain look for America? |

It was big in the seventies over here, but you'd be hard pressed to find anyone under 40 who likes it. It's a shame as some country music is really good.

I love Sugarland, Lady Antebellum, Band Perry, Martina McBride, Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood etc
I love country music, and all music where a story gets told across a song, which is what a lot of Country does. |

Folk isn't Country.
American traditional music is also called roots music. Roots music is a broad category of music including bluegrass, country music, gospel, old time music, jug bands, Appalachian folk, blues, Cajun and Native American music. The music is considered American either because it is native to the United States or because it developed there, out of foreign origins, to such a degree that it struck musicologists as something distinctly new. It is considered "roots music" because it served as the basis of music later developed in the United States, including rock and roll, contemporary folk music, rhythm and blues, and jazz. |

Lady Antebellum and Train have both been in the UK top 20 singles chart for a while now and i am sure they're both country acts...also Taylor Swift was huge here with 'Love Story' and in the past Leann Rimes, Shania Twain have been pretty successful...

Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis all made some of my favourite country music. Interestingly they all started out as rockabilly/rock and roll acts!

Country is a part of Folk, at least for wiki:

No it's not and that paragraph doesn't say it is either. It puts them both in "roots music" which is a broad term covering many genres.
American folk music is a musical term that encompasses numerous genres, many of which are known as traditional music, traditional folk music, contemporary folk music or roots music. Roots music is a broad category of music including bluegrass, country music, gospel, old time music, jug bands, Appalachian folk, blues, Cajun and Native American music. My bad, here is the correct quote:

Carrie Underwood got to number 11 in the album charts recently which I thought was amazing.
That Lady A song has been kicking around the charts for ages. (though it's hardly a real Country sounding song) There is no reason why Modern Country can't do well over here though, even someone like Mirana Lambert who I class as proper twangy Country. It's just the stereotype needs to be knocked on the head. As soon as country is mentioned people in this country automatically think the following:- Country and Western !! Yeaa-haa !! Cowboys !! Dolly Parton  The modern stuff is very pop sounding. The music videos are very trendy and full of beautiful looking people. It's a far-cry from the old country stereotypes. If people and the media got over the stereotyping and opened their eyes I think it would do well. A good song is a good song regardless of genre. |
