I think if that happened it will give the number 1 spot a bit more legitimacy.

they've already announced that they could do this as soon as next year - there was a story on the bbc site only last week.

single sales are as low as 400,000 a year, with downloads expected to be @ 250,000 by next year.

I think that should be "a week".

Whilst I can see the the reasoning behind this, I can see a possible problem. Well I don't know if it actually would be a problem but it's worth thinking about.

I don't download singles myself - I prefer to buy the odd one I particularly like on cd - so I may have got this wrong, but the download sites don't just include the current hits; they also have plenty of oldies don't they? This could potentially mean that a single released years ago could get back in the charts if enough people downloaded it. Fair enough, you could say, if it's that popular then it deserves to be back in the chart, but then aren't we effectively changing the whole way we perceive music sales and popularity? You could get the (admittedly unlikely) situation where singles in the top 10 aren't getting any airplay purely because they haven't got there through the 'traditional' route, and aren't therefore necessarily available on cd. Might the record companies have something to say about that? What do other people, maybe those more knowledgeable in the music sales business, think?
