I am horrified at the Broadcast magazine executives voting Knots Landing as one of the ten worst ever US imports. How ridiculous. In its time it was well made, good scripts, good acting, emmy nominated performance by Michele Lee. I would put it down as one of the 10 best

Can you compare it with Extreme Makeover, Jerry Springer and the Anna Nicole Show - or even Bold and Beautiful? Course not. Complete nonsense list and annoying it got into the newspapers!

Your title is misleading.

"Baywatch" won the title.

I'm not sure what the hell was going on in the minds of those voting, but Knots Landing, one of the top 10 worst US shows? I really don't think so. There is no comparision with the likes of The Bold & The Beautiful Show and Jerry Springer. In fact, I'd be more inclined to say that Dallas should fall under the list of worst shows based on its last few seasons.

Out of all the night time soaps, Knots Landing was actually considered one of the best by TV critics, in terms of both acting and scripting .. where as Dallas and Dynasty got more and more outraegous as they attempted to stem their falling ratings (Bobby in the shower on Dallas, Wedding Massacre on Dynasty, UFO on Colby's), Knots Landing actually stayed pretty grounded and never went to OTT, hence why it probably out lasted them all, being the last of the 80's night time soaps (Dallas, Dynasty, Falcon Crest, The Colby's) to come off the air in 1993.

Totally agree... and thank you for remembering that Falon's UFO meeting was an end of series cliff hanger on The Colbys - not Dynasty as is often reported

TBH the embittered producers apparently did it to cause 'Dynasty' a problem.

'Deep Space Nine' had a similar relationship with the ST:TNG films.

They basically knew they'd want Fallon back on the parent show.

IIRC they had to pretend she's just went a bit mental.

Yeah it was a long time ago, but she insisted she'd been abducted and (funnily enough) they all thought she was a bit of a loon!

I think Dynasty was in trouble before that. The post about Knots Landing has got me reading some of the episode guides. Dynasty peaked in its 5th season, ending the season as the No1 show (this was the season that built up to the massacre finale), but then it just went silly and OTT and within 2 years, it had gone from the No1 to No 25. Actually, does anyone remember the last ever season (not the rather disappointing mini series), it was actually very good, but sadly by the time the writers had got the show back on track, it had lost too much of its audience and ABC had moved it up against Cheers on NBC.

That was the one with Krystle's plate-related party piece, the dead tennis coach and the Nazi art treasures under the mansion?

I never saw Knots Landing but i have never heard many bad things, if anything said about it.
The Bold and the Beautiful is definitely a great soap so i have no idea why that is on the list! Plus, its the most watched soap in the world so that goes even more to show that this list is stupid!

Statistics are not a measure of quality, logic or wisdom even when (shock horror!) they come in the form of ratings or programme sales.

All those viewers may be entitled to their opinion but so are the poll compilers surely?

How odd, actually the makers of 6ft Under were KL fans and the witer of American Beauty who was inspired by the cul-de-sac

The list of TOP actually says Most Influential imports and Dallas was one of the biggest influences on television far surpassing Knots Landing.

I enjoyed Knots Landing, I thought it was great but preferring the saga like format of Dallas. Dallas was amazing TV for the first 6 seasons but then lost its way.

One of the best things about Knots Landing was the ever changing shapes of Val's and Karen's noses! It was even more noticeable when they'd have flash backs!

Can't remeber the first two you mention, especially the plate??, but yeah, the Nazi Tresure and also the body in the lake. I thought they really turned it around in the last season, but by that point everyone had deserted the show. Actually I was reading earlier that even before ABC annouced it was cancelled, both Joan Collins and the guy who played Dex had said they wouldn't be back next season .. probably, sealing it fate. BTW, ABC is actually showing a Dynasty special in Jan 2005, called Dynasty : The Making of A Guilty Pleasure .. with lots of behind the scenes footage and stories of the sometimes desperate and hilarious efforts to keep the show at the top of the ratings. Should be fun!

I totally agree with everyone on here. Knots Landing was a great show. I actually happened to watch and like the majority of the shows listed in the worst section. Knots Landing, Falcon Crest, Baywatch and I loved The Bold and the Beautiful, so what does that say about me? I guess we all just have different tastes.

In my opinion there is nothing quite like the US prime time soaps. They are exciting, well written, dramatic and are completely outraegeous. One thing I never understood though is the way Dallas, Dynasty, Knots Landing, Falcon Crest were all aired in the UK and made huge here during the 80's, yet all of the 90's US prime time soaps were basically ignored here and networks didn't pick them up for some reason? Anyone know why? Melrose Place for example ran from 1992-1999, was a huge hit all over the world. Basically a 90's Dallas starring Heather Locklear, yet it was never taken on by the BBC like the rest were???

I know, I was always diappointed that ITV or the BBC didn't air the show. It could have been a huge hit. There was a lot of politics in the early 90's with regards to European TV quotas and a push to less US programming, especially on the main channels and I think this created a bit of a snob culture amongst the terestrial channels. A classic example of this sort of snobbery/mistreatment was evident back in the late 90's. ITV decided to counter some month long sporting event (I forget exactly what it was) on the BBC with the Spelling soap 'Savannah'. It aired Fridays at 9pm (I think in 6x 2-hr blocks?). Anyway it had very good ratings and even the TV critics liked it .. but did they then follow it up and showseason 2 in a decent slot? No. In fact they waited something like three years before showing season 2, and when it finally aired it was in a midnight time slot.

Well the wost US import had to be Santa Barbara....
Knots Landing was one of the best US shows we had - The reason why it was so good a lot of it was improvised the actors were given the situation and left to act. I think thats what made it so good
