84 inch screen

I saw this on news that LG is coming out with an 84 inch TV. It will use ultra definition that is about 4 times better than the full HD. All features from a LG 3d Smart Tv will be included. Would anyone want to buy this?

There is an obvious reasons not to buy that.

There are no ultra definition sources and an HD or SD source would look pretty poor on such a large screen.

Only if you view from exceptionally close (84 inches away would be more than far enough for excellent existing HD results) - and presumably an 84 inch screen would mean you have a VERY large room

Why would it mean you have a very large room when it only needs to be viewed from only 7ft away?

Hang on, 4K is Quad HD. 8K is Ultra HD.

Covers both.

UHDTV1=4k UHDTV2=8K.

Thought ultra definition was defined by two levels UHDTV1 (4K) and UHDTV2 (8K).

Because most TV programming is still only SD, and you need to be a LOT further away (minimum of 210 inches really) to watch SD.

Most TV is probably SD if you're watching shopping/religious channels.

Plenty of HD about, majority of all premiums channels are HD, there's Bluray and HD gaming, I don't think that SD argument holds anymore IMO, can't remember the last programme I saw in SD was.

I could be wrong, but anyone considering that particular TV will not be considering it for SDTV.

Most people watch programmes for their content, not just because it's in HD

And unless you subscribe to Sky HD there are very few HD channels available.

So you would watch the SD version of a simulcast HD channel?

Why would this TV only suit someone with Sky HD?

Even if someone was only interested in the terrestrial channels in HD there's enough justification for them to get it.

No, but the majority of programmes don't have that option.

Perhaps they should buy a B&W portable TV instead?

The paltry HD offerings on Freeview are hardly worth buying an 84 inch TV for.

My living room wouldn't be big enough for an 84" TV I can imagine watching CNBC on it though

Are you sure?

99% of movies are simulcast, as are Sports, and these channels are the main drive to pull in HD customers, the rest has to be around 75%+, prime time it increases sharply, even for Freeview HD.

I'd have to say the majority do have that option.

If this TV were in the shops now I bet it would sell just because of the Olympics.

If you can afford that tv, you've probably got sky HD anyway.

I'd be happy to wait for higher definition content. In the meantime, the 2160 lines of vertical resolution will mean this TV will be able to display Passive 3D at 1080p Full HD.

84 inch screen

No, I will not buy one because of the following

It is NOT a Plasma set, I prefer my next TV to be a Plasma one

Nothing is broadcasting in 4k yet here in the UK

Better buy it quick then, assuming OLED is a success it's only going to kill off Plasma even quicker than now.

And unlikely to - there wouldn't be any point - existing HD is as much as you need, even at what is really too close for sensible viewing. Higher resolution would just mean you would have to view even closer, probably 3-4 feet or nearer for an 84 inch TV.

4K broadcasting is at least 10 years off.

Bandwidth for current HD broadcasting is still too low.

LG will be releasing their OLED TV and I believe one of their models will be a 84inch screen. I know the 55 and 47inch look fantastic for the OLED, but I am very curious of the quality on the 84inch.

As always with OLED "anytime soon" - but at least "soon" seems to be more weeks/months than decades as in the past.

Also being 4k means this can play back Bluray 3D in full HD which isn't possible in all other passive TVs at the moment.
