I think each Band Aid song was good 'at the time' each was recorded. The current one has all the current stars, like the 1st one. As for the 2nd one, when that was recorded, all that was in the charts was SAW artists, so really that was quite apt for that time! At the end of the day, it dosn't really matter which one is the best, its the money its gonna make, but hey my fave was the 1st one!

I'm afraid two of the Blandest voices in music at the moment are the first two voices on '20' Martin & 'Dido' - and Williams and Sugababes sound dreadful, the guitars sound like the Darkness (i.e. not good) 'Bono' is trying his hardest to sound different from the orignal and it doesn't work...I hate both Bedingfields, Stone etc in the chorus/background. Young and (whoever he's duetting with..."eerr...tell me your name...") sound awful together/. The saving grace for me is Tom Chaplin, woefully underused, he should have had more than the 'Feed the world' solo, but its certainly the poignant (sp?) moment of the single.

Sorry to say this but Godrich is one of my favourite producers...he hasn't 'produced' the goods this time.

I hate the song - always have done and always will do. I'll never understand how a song that would reach so many via it's Charity status, was so shoddily written. The original sounds as though it was written in an hour over a few pints and the recording process sounds little better. And yet it continues to be remade years later?!

With the supposed collective song-writing talent this country possesses, one would have thought that someone could stop earning their millions for a week, put pen to paper, write a decent song that folk actually want to hear and lay this God awful Band Aid record to rest, once and for all.

I'm no keen on Band Aid 20, but it is better than Band Aid 2, that was awful. The original is still the best, if a little dated.

Band Aid I - By a country mile!
Band Aid 20 - It's noway near the first one, yet much better than
Band Aid II - I keep watching the video now, the key changes are horrendous, it should be one artist for one line for gods sake! Great comedy value, especially the second line - I thought it was the village people until I saw it - how camp is that?

1. Band Aid - By far, the original is the best version of this song.
2. Band Aid II - Some great vocal perfomances on this track, not as good as the original, but very "of the time" performance with some great stars of the day.
3. Slade - How the hell could I put the awful Band Aid 20 version down on this list, when Slade made an incredible version of this song!

Band Aid 2-It's catchy and more polished '80's pop. (It taught me the song, as it was the first version I heard of it myself.)
Band Aid-Slightly sketchy due to it's rushed recording, but a classic, nevertheless.
Band Aid 20-A fair stab at the song for a new generation, but a bit plain and karaoke-style for my liking. I also think the rap bit by Dizzee Rascal is trivial and disrespectful to the meaning of the song. Still, I bought it, anyway!
It seems people like Justin Hawkins and Chris Martin are only criticising it so as not to be "uncool", despite their appearance in the song. So is everyone else-what a society we live in nowadays-whatever happened to community spirit...?!

not really sure about the new Band Aid song, its nothing special like the 1st one was, will be interesting to see if it lasts the test of time in christmas's to come, or whether we will just be hearing the orginal still in 5 years time!
Agreed with everything you wrote there, nothing I can add: I'd suggest we'll be hearing the original more though!

I'm pretty sure that's the point though. It was never meant to be a masterpiece, or the greatest song of all time, or even the best Christmas song of all time. It was simply written to a) make people sit up and think, b) alert people to the awfulness of the situation in Africa and c) raise some much needed cash.

So there are some rough edges to it, some ill-thought-out lines remain in it ("there won't be snow in Africa this Christmas time", for example), and it does have that 'cobbled together' feel, but all the better.

Interestingly, does anyone know whether the PRS royalties from that song (and there must be shitloads, the amount of times that song is played each Christmas) go also to the Band Aid trust, or are they kept from charity?

They should have re-released the original on CD at the same time as the new effort, then we could have seen what people really thought and and they probably would have made a few quid more. The new version is just a poor imitation in my opinion.

The original 1984 version is on the Band Aid 20 CD.

They were probably concerned that the original would beat the new version if released separately, but stuck it on there to get a few extra sales out of the purists who wanted to hear it again, and on CD!

There seem to be lots of very interesting points of view on this.

My choice-

1. Band Aid.

As for the other two, way too lame, no guts, no feeling, no power and no real interst in listening to them.
Band Aid 20 may have been released in order to raise money but sadly, that's the only reason I'd ever consider buying it.
