I will watch my recorded Olympics tomorrow, was switching in and out for a while. But sorry, on BBC they just said it will be watched by an estimate of 1b, I'm sure 4 hour ago, they said 4b. Quite a massive difference.

As a Scot, I don't think I've ever felt as British as when the British team came out to Heroes. Amazing. I think I'll be watching that a few times. In terms of ratings, lateness will drag it down a bit. The cauldron being lit, which you'd have thought would be the peak audience, happened at about 12.45 by my reckoning. Hope it does really well though
I reckon the start of the athletes parade will have killed it from a ratings perspective. Indeed, how many will have known there was more to come if they tuned out at 10.30? We watched in 3d on BBC HD. Fantastic. But we had to endure Paul Dickinson and Colin Jackson endlessly wittering on and talking over everything. Why did it need different commentary to the main BBC1 telecast? |

Do we still get the power surge figures as an early indicator - I'd have thought 10.30pm at the beginning of the athletes parade might give a good idea of how many viewed, although I'm sure all the papers printed before midnight will include the ratings tomorrow. Just hope the 1am finish doesn't mean we have to wait longer for the figure - but it deserves to do really well.

That opening ceremony was glorious. Streets around me were quiet. I think it would have been huge. From the countdown show theses seemed to be a vibe that tonight The Olympics was the only thing worth watching. It must have rated huge. Shouldn't it?

I thought the whole thing was fantastic tonight. It's moments like this im proud to be British. It was nice to feature Our Music,The History,Iconic Tele and our Humour. Everything went to plan and i was highly Impressed. I think a Huge figure is possible and very much deserved ![]() ON BBC News they have just been showing people's reactions, other footage,The Tube stations ect. |

Can someone explain the power surge concept to me? I didn't realise it was an indicator of people leaving their tellies - is it something to do with making tea/going the toilet etc?

It'll be interesting how the Closing Ceremony fares as it's been directed by Stephen Daldry, doesn't it usually have some involvment of the city hosting the next Olympics in this case Rio?

Fantastic...Really enjoyed that Brilliant show. A Friday night well spent imo.
I really hope for a massive rating tomorrow and i think we are going to be very surprised. Can i change my peak of 21m to 28? ![]() ![]() Quote:
Technically we've overrun here, with a scheduled finish of 00.35. Fascinating ratings surely in the morning....

This seems to be overrunning a lot. Could be a 2 hour parade at this rate. If BBC1 goes off air at 1am it will massacre the average. I'm thinking 16m from 8.50-1am, peak of 22m.

The whole ceremony was absolutely incredible. I feel so proud of Britain right now, what we stand for and what we can achieve. I really do believe that it will have hit a 30m peak and I stand by that prediction. I think a 24m average, and a 30m peak.

I watched the second half without commentary, was excellent. Great to have the option - I know they mentioned it, but it could have been cross-promoted better. |

Funny you should mention the athletes' parade Robbie as quite a few people left the stadium during that bit to get home! The fools! They missed that glorious cauldron.
Didn't look good that crowd shots towards the end showed people just getting up and walking out, as if it was a football match and their team was 5-0 down. Quote:
There's a surge in electricity demand after a high-rated programme as people simultaneously switch on kettles in particular. The National Grid are given programme timings by the broadcasters as a matter of routine, even for year-round soaps I believe, so they can plan electricity supply for expected surges.
http://www.nationalgrid.com/uk/Elect...altime/Demand/ Only goes back an hour though, so not much info on it right now at half two! Quote:
I believe there'll be fewer 3D cameras, and the editing will be different. So, when Huw says 'now we can see Obama', 3D might be seeing someone else. They do the same at Wimbledon..

Rio will have an 8 minute segment. The closing ceremony is usually quite difficult due to the restrictions on rehearsal and sets. They usually only get access to the stadium at 3pm or so on the last day.
After a break from international sports in 2013, there are two major sports event in the UK with the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England, I imagine there won't as much attention compared to the Olympics but I'm sure both events will do decently. |

The Grid also publishes historic data. Having a quick skim through May 2012, it looks like current 2.30am power usage is about 1,000MW up on what you'd normally see it drop to in the early hours, and it was another 1,000MW up on that at 1.30am. So perhaps there are more people still up and about "on a high" from the spectacular events earlier tonight?
Anyway, best turn in for the night so I can be here poised and ready at 9.40am... ...to see a "Ratings delayed" post. ![]() Sweet dreams of 20m+ peaks everyone.

Overall, it was a good show. The whole industrial revolution bit was really impressive looking - indeed the whole stadium looked great all night. The grassy knoll was actually quite a nice addition! During the dull speeches I was quite taken by having such an unusual backdrop for such a thing. Although top marks to Her Majesty, best speech of the night, well done my dear!
Bond & The Queen was great too. The childrens literature bit was good (although the NHS inclusion wasn't the most obvious thing for an Opening Ceremony!). Social media/digital age thing was cringeworthy. Music overall was good and fitted what was happening but was let down by some very poor choices of live guests. Considering it's one of our strengths I was quite surprised at that. Not a lot they can do about the never ending walkabout with the athletes, the IOC demands that. Cauldron lighting was spectacular and so were the fireworks, all made for a fantastic climax (yes, I'm pretending McCartney never happened). Oh and good to see Mr Bean get himself in there too! ![]() 8.5/10, maybe even 9/10 for me. Plenty of people I was with had enough and wanted to go to bed during the athletes procession but everyone stuck around for the flame. I suspect that will be the case across the country and the average may well hold up. It's just such a big deal that I think people will have stuck around through the less than great bits. It was a bit of an endurance test during the walkabout then the speeches but once you got far enough through the alphabet there was no way anyone was giving up! |

Given that it was almost four hours without ad breaks, I wonder how it fared with broadcasters with ad breaks especially NBC in America and Nine in Australia, I imagine they would skip the vast majority of the athletic procession and maybe some of the prerecorded bits.

Rubbish odds but if you've got some notes to spare, lump on!
22m+ average for a 3.5 hr broadcast ending at 12.30am in the year 2012? I think not. There's only one sensible option out of the above choices. Yes, it's potentially a once in a lifetime event. But everything we have learned from studying the numbers over the years in this thread points towards 22m being completely unachieveable as an average in these circumstances. It's rare enough as a peak. |

Can i jump in with a peak of 30 million with an average rating of 26 million for the ceremony. Dare i suggest an even higher peak of around 33 million may be possible.
We can but dream

Averaging 20m from 9pm to after midnight will be damn near impossible. England v Italy managed that for the match but that was between 8 and 10pm. If the ceremony was 8-11pm I'd be more hopeful. Plus lots of people watching at events rather than at home and BARB doesn't measure them. I just can't call it.

But the games is a once in a lifetime event for us in the UK, we wont get the World Cup again for at least a decade so the Olympics ceremony are must see tv for the vast majority of the uk viewing public. Thats why i summarised such high ratings.
