I think these sensational numbers may cause him to extend his stay in the bunker. Even Corrie getting 12m tonight or something might not tempt him out...

BBC Press Office:

Combined peak at 9.35pm was 26.3m, broken down as:

BBC1: 26.0m
BBCO1: 0.201m
BBCHD: 0.084m

Assuming the BBC1 figure was indeed a round 26.0000m, then that's actually 26.285m.

Looks like the peak was for the Athletes coming out into the stadium!

I'm really shocked by this. I expected the Closing Ceremony to hit 19-20m, but I didn't think there would be a possibility that it would beat the opening I thought the Opening Ceremony would top the 2012 year chart and be the biggest record audience of all time. It was more of a draw, and unsurprisingly better than the Closing.

Wow - astonishing figures for the closing ceremony.

I think, instead of people getting viewer fatigue, actually the opposite happened.
The games were so good that people just got hooked into the whole scenario and that by the time the closing ceremony came round the audience was already captured.

The daytime schedule looks so boring now the Olympics is over.

That's a well deserved figure. It might not have been the opening ceremony but it was still a great show. I loved it because there was lots of old school music I liked from the good old days. Off course they had to bung some modern little boy dribble in to keep the younger demographic happy.

22.9m ! We wont see those numbers for a long time if not ever. Sad thought really.

By the way The Who should have closed the Opening ceremony. Better than you know who!

Even My wife went from moaning all the time to religiously watching it every night. It has been probably one off the best if not the best event I have certainly ever experienced and that's on TV! The atmosphere at every venue was outstanding the sport was outstanding the BBC's coverage was outstanding and the opening and closing ceremonies will live on in the memories for decades to come. Nobody can quite do a sporting event or a party like us Brits.

Yep, with the officials I bet it'll beat OFAH for the most watched programme in the UK of all time on a single showing.

If they put out a DVD with the Opening Ceremony, Closing Ceremony and the BBC's Eddie Butler Olympics Review (in full) on it (plus Emili Sande's haunting Imagine closing montage), then I have no doubt it would be the biggest selling DVD of all time.

considering you lot are 'ratings junkies' I'm bemused that so many of you actually thought that figures would be

a)significantly down on the opening ceremony
b)viewers would get turned off by the iffy musical line up

considering what a big event the Olympics are, combined with the fact we won't see them in these shores for at least another 40 years, viewing figures were always going to be high.

around 28.6m were watching television between 9pm and the close of ceremony, given the choice what why would miss one last reminder of the 'happy & glorious' last 16 days

I knew I was gonna be watching till end regardless of how bad I thought some of the acts were, I'm not likely to see this again in my lifetime in my hometown

anyway as Forrest Gump would say "that's all I have to say about that"

There is already a BBC Olympics DVD being advertised - it includes the opening and closing ceremonies. ''Out soon''.

Just flicking through the CC now on catch up, the pub was pretty full last night and there was no television.

I can see why it had such a massive audience, it doesn't look classy, but it does seem addictive in nature. I can see a lot of people discussing this over lunch today at work.

I am pleased that I was almost 10m out with my prediction

How did the ratings for the 2012 closing ceremony compare with the 2008 closing ceremony.

I wonder if the ratings will be anywhere near that in 2016, the show is likely to start at 9pm in Brazil, so it would be 1am here wouldn't it?

That MUST be the lowest ever prime time audience, and certainly flagship 9pm audience, in the history of ITV?!

22.9m vs 0.67m - a 34 to 1 margin tw__ting - the biggest primetime thrashing in British TV history?

George - the cyanide pills...!

(Does it include +1 as well? )

OUAT doing decently against the opposition. But the Touch of Frost rating is the sort of thing you'd expect on ITV3, not ITV1. Dear me - slaughtered by the opposition. Any ratings for Community Shield?
