Closing Ceremony Countdown - 12.3m!

(beats Opening Ceremony Countdown which had 10.1m)

DS reports the ratings for the Closer never once dipped below 20m during the live show! However, one million switched off during George Michael, never to return - had they not put George up, one assumes the Opening Ceremony peak would have been blitzed and the average even higher!

Also, they say it was ITV's worst day of ratings in its entire 57 year history (and this is Paul Millar of all people having to write this - - fair play to him), with a derisory 3.9% prime time share, the worst ever by a massive margin.

BBC1 got a 66% primetime share!

Just phenomenal. The closing ceremony started off a bit wobbly but came into its own.

The last two weeks are historical in our history, and from a Ratings perspective surely must be the most exciting event since this infamous thread launched years ago.

As I've already said, the BBC's coverage has been second to none, and the amazing figures we've seen, not only for the opening and closing ceremonies but for many of the big events have just blown the mind and been so well deserved for what has been public service broadcasting at its finest.

Any neysayers who complain about the BBC fulfilling its remit can quieten down now!

Just a note, between 21:00 and 24:20, the ceremony averaged 23.20m (81.66%), the opening ceremony had 23.11m (83.08%).

Have really missed rzt's insight and stats as the record books are rewritten, but I don't think he has once posted on the thread since before the Games, although he is still posting on the RPG thread.

Just wondering, does that figure of 23.20m include the 3D showing as well?

Well, clearly that's an absolutely phenomenal rating for the Closing Ceremony and well deserved as the BBC have done what they do best over the past fortnight and really excelled in their coverage. I didn't think the concert itself was as good as it could have been, but it didn't really matter. It was unmissable, compelling and brought the nation together for a few precious hours.

Of the rest, Once Upon a Time did very well up against the countdown as one of seemingly few programmes to top the million mark on commercial TV last night. A loyal audience that have been completely and utterly enchanted by this charming programme over the past few months. Two more to go then it's the return of Dallas !

I told you the closing ceremony would get over 20m. With the success Team GB had Plus the general excitement of the games it was obvious. People wanted one last chance to see this Once in a lifetime event. Told ya! Also very smart of BBC1 to put on that brilliant Ripper Street trailer straight afterwards.

Brilliant for what was a pretty awful show!

I was sat out until about 10.30 and caught up on DVR, like many others I'd guess

I must say the new Original British Drama Trailers are really slick. Hopefully they pay off.

Terrestrials were hit very badly last night, arguably worser than the opening ceremony. It looks like the audience was more evenly split, leading to some odd results.

Looking forward to when BARB updates, quite a big possibility that ITV1's #30 show will be under 2 million.

Who was on when that 26.28m peak came? I think it was after 1D.

I'm happy The Accused is back, and Doctor Who obviously, but what about Ripper Street and others?

- BBC One's best week since June 1998 or before, rather awkwardly, I don't actually know since when! BARB's website only goes back to July 1998, and it is the highest since then. Must be a good excuse for them to pull the BARB website back a few years...
- ITV1's second lowest week ever
- Channel 5's worst week ever

Did the Olympics not just deliver what it should have done?

The events themselves were very competitve. Team GB did really well and we've been literally bombarded by 24/7 coverage from the media. It's been impossible to escape across an overwhelming radio, print, online and tv coverage.

The Opening/Closing Ceremony was event TV in the vein of the Diana Concert, Live8 etc but on a bigger scale

A home nation, favourable viewing times, school holidays, huge hype should all point towards massive figures and good averages. Which did happen.

Well done to the BBC but let's not get overexcited here!

When GeorgeS reappears, Robbie will hand over the ratings thread flag to him to mark the end of the BBCs' super summer. DMN will then make a speech congratualing the BBC and declaring their super summer is now finished. GeorgeS will then wave the flag and ITV1's strong autumn performance will have started.

An over the top Olympic Strictly would be nice

The viewing figures have been out of this world for the BBC & they deserve it for the coverage. Just think about it, our home games, Mo Farah the olympic 10,000 & 5000m champion, Micheal Phelps in the pool, Jessica Ennis & of course not forgetting the man himself Usain Bolt. Of course there are countless others but will we ever see an olympics again like this?

I think it's fair to get overexcited about such ratings what the likelehood of them ever was.

Don't bank on it. Murdoch's papers, the Daily Heil and the Helegraph will spend very little time praising the BBC and will always be on the look-out for the tiniest thing that might be turned into a full-blown 'scandal'. Just look at J Ross/R Brand ... and that was before the Tories got in power with their mission to toe the Murdoch line.

If anything, the BBC's success with the Olympics just raised the bar. What its enemies will now be on the hunt for is something to 'cut it down to size' ...
