Dolby Prologic II
I have read two conflicting reports on Dolby Prologic II.
1 If you have a Dolby Prologic II decoder/processor you can use an existing vcr tape, or tv/satellite broadcast and a pseudo 5.1 sound will be produced. 2 You can only achieve a 5.1 equivalent sound if the tape/broadcast has already been made in Dolby Prologic II. Does anyone know which of these is true? Thanks wicket |

DPII isnt a format as such, merely a clever way of decoding by using some phasing juggery pokery. Hence any stereo signal can benefit from such circuitry.
Having tested it a few times with my Denon 3802 I think there is an improvement over standard PL but to some degree as the surround mixes were made with mono surrounds as the standard, whether DPII's additional phasing is an advance is something of a moot point. |

Reinforcing Duncan's comment, I find Dolby PL2 much better than the original. However, if the stereo signal is poor, DPL2 processing can sometimes produce some strange separation effects.
Generally, much better than PL1 though, and IMHO a reason to chose an amp that has the facility other one that doesn't. Simon |

Sorry for the late post but I`d also like to add that DPL2 is a definate improvement. I`ve used it on older films on DVD that haven`t got 5.1 and the effect is very good, the vocals from the centre speaker are much crisper. Not such stunning results from VHS but still better. ( p.s I have a Marantz amp ).

Thanks skanky, it looks like it is a bonus to have on an amp and by the time I need a new one the price should have come down.

The demo for Wipeout Fusion on this months OPS2M has a big Dolby Digital Prologic II logo at the start!! does this make sense? I don't have the kit to check out what was begin broadcast.

You would need to have an amp capable of decoding the Prologic II to be able to get it from the PS2 game. It is the first I have heard of a PS2 game having this, I have only seen Crash with a surround sound option.
