Ok, so today a vanilla Youview box is now officially available from Humax and TalkTalk has also announced thier Youview offering today.

Having had a look at what TalkTalk is offering - what do people think ?. The big downer for me regarding TalkTalk is that you can't record any of the streamed channels and none of are in HD either.

I hope BT address both the HD & recording aspect.

I'm even tempted to buy the Humax box and then flog it when BT release thiers.

TalkTalk would have had a new customer today up until I read the small print. Don't see why anybody would pay extra for channels and not be able to record them onto the PVR the service is coming through.

I guess it's a case of waiting for BT to announce their details but I'm not sure if they'll be carrying the Sky channels because of the game they're no doubt playing with each other over the Premier League next year... but we shall see.

Already got access to on demand content through Xbox and PS3. The TalkTalk TV package looks perfect for me but without recording capability it becomes a total fail.

BT have a big bargaining chip to use when negotiating with Sky - I fully expect to see Sky channels on BT and in HD too hopefully.

In regards to TalkTalk, yes - total fail. If BT can address this then then they can compete.

Although the TalkTalk page doesn't mention recording, one of the features of YouView is that you're able to record, as well as pause and rewind TV. The Humax box is surely capable of doing all three.

The TalkTalk page does mention recording. Read the 'small print' section.

Agreed.
It would be interesting if a TT forum member could ask TT if it has any plans to make the IPTV channels recordable and to report back over here.

That might defeat the purpose of catch-up TV. Why not record the original transmission, if you can?

I realise there are times where catch-up TV is useful, like when you hear about something after broadcast or, heaven forbid, one of your recordings failed.

I must admit I use catch-up TV infrequently as I seem to manage to record what I want at the scheduled time. There have been a couple of times when a recording failed so I have used the relevant websites to catch-up. Useful in that regard.

No variant (Humax, BT or TalkTalk) of the YouView box has an IPTV tuner so you will never be able to record non-Freeview channels on this current generation of boxes.

TalkTalk 'booster' channels are delivered via 'TalkTalk Player', which is an app. BT Vision on Demand (from Warner Bros, etc) is also delivered via BT's app, 'BT Vision Player'.

BT will be offering linear channels though.

So are TalkTalk.
It'll be interesting to see how all this unfolds for both companies.

TalkTalk are offering 60 channels, plus kids, plus Sky Sports & Movies.

BT haven't a clue what just hit them.

Really? BT's ADSL broadband prices are terrible vs. TalkTalk (or pretty much anyone).

TT are getting shocking press right now. In the trials, BT have opened up certain stuff. I am only permitted to be that vague.
