For anyone interested, PC world and Curry's are selling Playbooks for £129 which I think is a great price. Just got one to use when I don't want to drag ipad around.

To get it at £129 you need to reserve it online and collect from store. Just got mine. Cracking.

I'll probably get one of these over a Neuxs 7.

It's the app situation that's the problem, isn't it? Brilliant price for browsing on watching films on the go.

I just want something to use say on the tube or carry out and about.

I'm impressed with the build quality and the price difference between the 16 gig Nexus in my view makes it the better product, unless you are going to use the Nexus as your MAIN device in which case I'd probably go for that, but as I have a ipad already I just want something cheap and easy to carry around. At £129 you can't beat it!

How smooth is it?

Any lag...

It's either this, wait for a ASUS TF300 (when I have enough, end of the year) or an Archos 101 G9 for £150.

From using it so far (web surfing and Twitter) it works really well. I haven't tried any Android apps on it yet in fact I'm just looking reading up on how to install Android apps that have been converted over. Not noticed any lag with it, certainly it's on a par with my iPad 2 and my work Galaxy Tab.

I'm not a gamer so can't comment on games, but it really is a nice device to use and hold (feels really solid and well made)

Thanks. Sideload Android Apps while you can because they're removing it soon.

Can you root this and flash an Android ROM onto it?

I've put a couple on that I need (Dropbox and Google maps) so far, seem to work fine.

The 2.1 update (coming soon) allows them to access the camera and allows them multitask properly.

No, you can't flash a ROM but you can run some Android apps...

It doesn't have a skype app does it? I was going to suggest one for my mum and dad but without skype not much point really.

There is no official Skype app for the Playbook although you can sideload the Android version. However, for what I've read the video call side doesn't work for various reasons.

The other way I've seen it to log into Skype on this site on the Playbook

https://imo.im/

There are a couple of demos on Youtube and they claim the video call does work but I think the other person has to also be logged in via the website and not their native Skype app (It seems confusing)

Bottom line is probably no so if Skype is important I wouldn't suggest it.

I could have read it wrong but the next update disables android API so not only stop sideloading of android Pos but also stop existing ones running. Of course its a big what if it gets released in the UK and when

RIM still might have a dream to release a 10" playbook (assuming they don't go under before then)....

I don't think it stops existing apps running.

Does this disable side-loading Android apps?

The 8Gb Nexus 7 costs 159 quid and leaves the Playbook dead in the water for performance and support. There is no logical reason to buy a Playbook at this stage.

Yes but who wants a tablet with 8 gig? The 16 gig Nexus is £200 which is a big difference.

But yes, if you are using it as your main tablet then I'd go for the 16 gig Nexus, but if you just want something to use for occasional use or a second tablet then the Playbook is a good deal.

I've not found any apps that I can't side load or get reasonable ones for on the Playbook store, some of the apps do cost but you're looking at 1-2 pounds.

I'm not a gamer so have no interest in games.

It may be on its on way out, but if your after a brilliant web browser currently plays any flash, hdmi out, excellant build quality, tethering with a blackberry, iplayer and not to bothered about cross platform apps then this will certainly do you for a couple of years.

Now if you want cross plaform apps, streaming and google regular updates like I do get the nexus.

As I have both the only reason I am keeping the nexus is due mainly due to the apps, apart from that and at this price the playbook is a bargain

If you know what to look for and don't mind flashing the odd ROM you can get a better Chinese branded Android ICS 16gb tablet for less money than the playbook and you can get acess to all the Android Apps through Google Play

No, that's supposed to be 2.1, this is just a bug fix update it appears.
