I got a reply from Sony Ericsson about this problem, not very helpful, this is what they said:
With regards to your enquiry, we are aware of this issue and currently Sony Ericsson are working together with O2 to rectify this problem.
One option for you to try is to turn off your phone and remove the battery for about 30 seconds then restart your phone.
Sometimes this can solve the issue all together.
Unfortunately at present we do not have a definitive solution for this problem but the investigation is on going to locate the reasons for this.
Blah, blah, blah!!! I did a master reset on the phone and it has worked fine, just make sure you back up all your numbers before doing so...
