David Cameron will face pressure to remove the Tory whip from the Conservative MP Aidan Burley after he tweeted that the Olympics opening ceremony was "multi-cultural crap".

Burley, who was sacked as a ministerial aide last year after he took part in a Nazi-themed stag party in the French Alps, described Danny Boyle's work as "the most leftie opening ceremony I have ever seen".

Downing Street sources moved quickly to distance themselves from Burley's tweets. "Clearly we don't agree," one source said.

The row erupted just after 10pm when Burley tweeted twice within a few minutes as the Olympic athletes started to enter the stadium after Boyle's staging.
It couldn't have been more PC. What was Shami doing there?

The British athletes were like drunken yobs on Saturday night.

I wouldn't say it was overly multi-cultural, I didn't think much of it after the opening act mind you.

In one respect I couldn't care less but I still felt it was completely cringey how they completely over represented black people in the ceremony. Tower HAMLETS is east london and very predominantly asian but I didn't see many asian participants barring the odd sikh.

The teenage Romeo and Juliet featured very prominantly and were black and mixed race, the kids choir in the audience was 50% black kids, the white woman got out of the car with her mixed race kid and went home to her black husband.

Like I say it was cringey, nothing more nothing less.

I'm not sure if quoting the story about Burley is supposed to help your argument or opposite it?

The man is a complete buffoon and, quite frankly, an embarassment.

I fail to see how it was multi-cultural either. Multi-racial, perhaps, but then it was supposed to represent London in no small way.

It was the standard that the arts are at today which is very poor. It does reflect badly on us as a nation. I'm sure the Queen was not amused.

Who knew there were so many black aristocrats in Victorian London? That was the most embarrasing bit. Maybe I should go back and check my aristocratic lineage.

Aidan Burley's backpeddle was so hard he actually deactivated his twitter account and restarted it in an attempt to hide his shame. He should know that it won't work.

I think any hopes he may have had at salvaging his career are well down the crapper now.

But he was right. It was a ludicrous re-writing of history and insulting to all of us, of whatever colour or race.

I sort of expected it would be like this. I'm more annoyed by the less than dignified behaviour of our athletes. What's with the pulling silly faces and roaring in to the camera. Had they been drinking or something?

The bit I liked the best was the foreign athletes proudly representing their countries and behaving in a dignified manner smiling and waving.

That's real multiculturalism, international separate and distinct countries with such wonderful unique cultural identity's. Much better than having a container country with everybody else's culture mixed in.

All the posh white people are the ones winning Team GB the medals...like the rowers/cyclists and sailors.

The ones doing silly faces etc...

So he'll be ok then..

As a Tory he probably hated the NHS playing a part too...

Funny... I commented to my wife earlier that I bet I know one person on DS who is going to rage at Shami being an Olympic flag-bearer.

What a surprise, you even started a thread about it, heh.

Thought you would appreciate a non immigration thread. In fact its a Tory's career down the drain thread. There's plenty of chat about Shami, PC, multicultural, boring speeches etc on the Olympic opening ceremony thread.

I think it's rather sad that people here are dismissing that brilliant spectacle on political grounds.

Oh, dear.

God forbid they get to enjoy themselves before the weight of expectation falls upon their shoulders. You make it sound like Tom Daley was taking a piss behind a Favorite Chicken while the Olympic Cauldron was being lit.

You also have to consider that the British athletes were given far more camera time than any of the other nations. Had other countries been given as much attention we probably would have seen similar scenes of joviality.

But if you want to keep moaning about how this country has gone down the toilet because our young athletes got to enjoy their moment in the spotlight, I won't stop you. But I would suggest for once trying to look on the positive side because that was an excellent Opening ceremony and one we, as a nation, should be proud of.

Hoo hum. Enjoy the games...

Well Spain was a bit like that, but our athletes are supposed to be British. It was like a Saturday night outside a nightclub in one of our high streets.

Oh I see that was supposed to represent modern Britain, how silly of me.

I think the ceremony is getting a mixed reception, judging by the comments so far on the other thread.

Yes but no white actors represented the Windrush arriving.

Hardly, what you seem to wish for is a form of cultural apartheid. Different cultures in seperate national boxes, never meeting. Anyway, many of those countries you enjoyed watching had multicultural and multiethnic members. Yet you only notice it here in the UK.

This is the London Olympics, hardly the ideal time for a mono-cultural rant.

I must admit I found all the "bait-the-reactionary-Tory" stuff liberally sprinkled over that ceremony highly amusing.

Even more so now that I find out that it has got up your noses.
