The Killing, where did it go wrong?

Dropped by AMC and will not be coming back for season 3. Last year the first season was brilliant, gripping and dark. I thought, how am going to wait a year for the conclusion. The ending was left open to go on to season 2. This year I could hardly watch a full episode without getting bored. What went wrong? Did they let the murder mystery of Rosie Larson drag on too long? Was there too much of a gap in between seasons? IMO they let it drag on too long and should have concluded it in the first season. I guessed the killer in the first season when there was a poll on digital spy, everyone was talking about it.

If you take your point over to the main thread (uk pace) you will find most disagree with you on the second season.

Did not go wrong at all for me. I thought Series 1 and 2 were very good. Never seen the original so i just took the show on its own as a murder mystery show and loved it.

I am with you on this, really enjoyed the whole thing, would love another series as long as Linden changes her clothes, at the very least that polar neck, and has a good shower!! xx

You can always watch the Danish series, they are still making that.

I've only ever seen the original Danish series of Forbrydelsen (which actually means The Crime) and it was 20x 1 hour episodes but there was certainly no let up in the tension or script, drama or acting quality for the second half of that series.

BBC4 showed this series as 2 consecutive episodes on Saturday nights for 10 weeks starting from 22 January, 2011. It was excellent drama as was the second Danish series of Forbrydelsen.

It dragged on for entirely too long. To be fair, so did the original Danish version. It was less a TV show than an incongruous collection of red herrings.

Or an example of extreme character development. I haven't watched much of the US version, but the reason I liked the Danish series was the ability to learn about their culture, how their schools are closely linked to their political system, how certain aspects of the legal system works and so on. It's also interesting to watch a lead female character who has been written to act like a male character.

I'd agree Forbrydelsen 1 did drag a little around the 17/18th episode But then again I found series 2 a little rushed so its hard to get the length right.

Those that haven't tried the Danish original really should, dont be put off by the subtitles as they are very well done - you quickly learn to read them without spoiling the flow of the action.

I really enjoyed both seasons but I think where they went wrong was having the Rosie murder case over the two series, I think a lot of people where really annoyed with the twist at the end of the first season.

Whilst I did enjoy the series I do agree that it dragged on a bit too long. one season of 13 episodes should have been long enough to tell this story.
I did feel there were too many red herrings and that they were all so serial in nature rather than have several suspects that needed to be wittled down to a prime suspect, all the clues pointed to one person then they'd be clearred and then the next person had overwhelming evidence pointing at them, then the next and on and on...

I think the series could have survived if the third season promised a resoluion in one season.

I'd love to but my eyesight is not up to subtitles, so I was happy that they made an english language version. I'd settle for a dubbed version but most people don't like dubbed stuff.

I'd say it's right to stop it there. It felt like a natural end to the show. The crime was solved (although there was scope to think there may have been more too it) and the characters went their seperate ways.

A 3rd series would seem forced to me. It might have been different if they'd done and dusted the case completely in series 1 and then moved onto another for series 2 but they didn't. Because of that The Killing was a show about the Rosie Larrsen murder.

So, I don't think it went wrong, as such. But I do think it felt a bit stretched out in some places, particularly the storyline where Mitch goes off to 'find herself'

Overall, I enjoyed it and was satisfied with the ending.

Two seasons was way too long for one murder investigation. I really liked a lot about the show, the two leads were fantastic, and Stan's journey was brilliantly portrayed, but 26 episodes to find out 'who dunnit' was just overkill.
Shame it's been pulled, if they'd continued with one investigation per season and had returning characters it would have been interesting.

Thing is, if you look at the timeline, it was a 26 day investigation into a murder which is actually probably quite a reasonable amount of time.

With single season investigation, it's doubtful you'd have got even a fraction of what Rosie's family, especially Stan, went through.

It didn't go wrong....it was a fantastic series and season 2 was much better then season 1.

I'm not bothered that is was cancelled though because I don't think it should have gone on after the Rosie case was solved anyway
