85 million records sold ,formed in East End of London and better than the appaling Artic Monkeys.
Oh sorry they're heavy metal and that just wouldn't do on mainstream TV

Well... you're right, they are too heavy. Rolling Stones would've been better suited.

Plus at the moment they are in North America and Canada on tour with Maiden England. I would have like Iron Maiden been played at the Olympics. It would have been fun... It would have been better than listen to some old geezer singing Hey Jude for the thousand time.

It seems like the closing ceremony is one massive gig of all the best that Britain has produced so they'd probably be better there. I think it would make an awful lot of people happy if Iron Maiden were there to perform something ... I don't think they're too heavy as they have a vast back catalogue with a whole range of songs.

Maiden, Muse, Coldplay, Spice Girls, Take That .. what else have I missed? I think we can pull out something a bit better than Paul McCartney singing Hey Jude again.

Alas, it won't happen .. but it should.

Totally agree, WTF were the artic monkeys doing the olympic opening. They are not from london and are totally crap. It would have been awsume to have somone like maiden do the opening, at least it would have given me a reason to bother watching it. My husband is from the east end and he could not believe some lightweight band that many have not even heard of got to play at the opening.

I didn't see it but let me guess, I bet they sang their one hit, that "on the dance floor" or whatever its called.

They were excellent. And yes they did play that (their most famous song from the fasted selling debut album ever) and also a great version of The Beatles Come Together. But it is all subjective. My daughter ( a MASSIVE Taylor Swift fan) thought they were really good.
But you cant please everyone.

Well one, the Olympics aren't just happening in London and two if you had your way it would have been Taylor Swift.

A quick check on the stats will tell you Iron Maiden play to crowds the size of which The Artic Monkeys can only dream about.!

They played in the "Ruskin Arms" in Manor Park long before Bruce Dickinson joined them, very much east London.

Huge Maiden fan, got all their albums and have seen them live, but they wouldn't have been right for that particular section of the ceremony. What song would they have played?! Number of the Beast wouldn't really have cut the mustard

Having said that, the total lack of any reference to Britain inventing heavy-metal in the music section was a poor decision. Sure, punk was important, but its flame died out pretty quickly; Black Sabbath kickstarted a revolution that is still going strong 40 years later.

Good points i would loved them to have played "different world"

But you are right between them Deep purple, iron maiden, black sabbath ect ect have sold millions of albums worldwide, and as you say the revolution started 40 years ago its britsh and has been more or less ignored in the ceromony in favour of mainstream stuff,it should have referrenced heavy metal/hard rock for sure.

Never laughed so much. Boyle putting Iron Maiden as a showcase for the world?

He's a son of punk FFS. And thank god for that.

The Arctic Monkeys were sensational. Sparky, inventive, kick ass, they have more creativity in their little fingers than Maiden have mustered in their entire leaden career.

I've watched IBYLGOTD on iPlayer a dozen times and it just gets better. Brilliant choice.

So sensational in fact they had to do a Beatles number!

Just look and see the size of crowd Iron Maiden play to ha ha the sort of crowds the Artic Monkeys do not see olympics apart plus Iron maiden have been pulling huge crowds since the 80s and have sold millions of records, fact they have lasted a lot longer then the punk fad.

So yes why not have them play live at an olympics ceromony.?

How can you even ask this question, iron maiden are legends, enough said really.

Artic monkeys are just a bubble gum indie band.

Your opinion isn't more valid than mine. For me Arctic Monkeys are miles better.

Didn't realise that was the criteria we used. On that basis then Take That are miles better than Iron Maiden.

Have you listened to their albums?

Thought not. They are the quintissential British indie band of the past decade, with attitude, creativity, with Turner's Alan Bennettesque lyrics they were the perfect in the context of Boyle's ceremony.

If AM are bubblegum, then IM are a big, dense, steaming suet pudding. This was a show showcasing YOUTH. To have that bunch of dinosaurs representing the country would have been embarrasment beyond endurance.

Dickinson lives in Chiswick as far as I know. He had a fencing equipment shop in the road I used to live in.

The Arctic Monkeys were superb; hardly a surprise given imo they are currently the best live rock act in the UK. Threads like this will always happen no matter which band got picked. Agree about the youth angle. We already had a 70 year old perform (very very badly as it happens but he is a worldwide legend so fair does); it would have looked odd having a bunch of 50+ year olds also playing. And if longevity and records sold is the criteria how about Depeche Mode instead? They've been going for 32 years and have sold more records that Iron Maiden.

That is a fair point. A genre of music we invented and it wasn't even acknowledged.

No it wasn't, it was a show celebrating British history, and music was part of that celebration.

In that sense, Iron Maiden formed in the East End of London and are, arguably, one of the most famous British bands around the world. They have played sold out shows in virtually every country in the world and, as over 50% of the audience at theirs shows is under 25 I would say they are still relevant to the YOUTH of today. Calling them "dinosaurs" would imply they should be extinct, but in reality their global fan base is still growing and their last album, The Final Frontier, was their most successful in commercial terms.

As for saying...

To have that bunch of dinosaurs representing the country would have been embarrasment beyond endurance.
Didn't Danny Boyle ask The Sex pistols if they would reform and perform? Remind me how they fit in with a theme of YOUTH?
