The Road

Never heard of it until now after checking IMDB for a horror/thriller to watch.

Has anyone seen it and if so can you tell me a bit more about the plot? I like the sound of it in IMDB but the trailer looks like there might be gore and torture in it, which I'm not keen on.

Also any suggestions for a good horror/thriller welcome (no blood and guts though please!).

Thanks

Singularly one of the saddest films I have ever seen. There's not really any gore, and certainly no torture, but it can be hard going. Marvellous film though.

The Road is a three-layered mystery that goes back each era to discover the origins of each incident. It's better to go in without knowing the plot. There is a couple of wince-inducing moments, but no torture or gore. I wouldn't describe it as a horror, though. It's essentially a slow-paced supernatural mystery with a couple of mild scares and poignant moments. The ending is rather sad.

Shutter (2004) - supernatural horror-mystery
Silk (2006) - supernatural thriller
Midnight FM (2010) (there is a couple of wince-inducing moments, but it's worth closing your eyes during those moments because the rest of the film is suspenseful and fun.) - thriller
R-Point (2004) - supernatural mystery
The Eye (2002) - supernatural thriller
Identity (2003) - supernatural mystery-thriller
Fallen (1998) - supernatural thriller
any Whispering Corridors film (favourites: Voice and Memento Mori)** - supernatural mysteries
Session 9 (2001) - supernatural horror/mystery
The Changeling (1980) - supernatural horror/mystery
The Orphanage (2007) - supernatural horror/mystery
Frailty (2001) - supernatural mystery
Dark Water (both versions are good) - supernatural mystery
What Lies Beneath (2000) - supernatural mystery
Noroi: The Curse (2005) - supernatural mockutary
Angel Heart (1987) (may be questionable? I can't remember now if there's blood. I think there is.) - supernatural mystery
Stir of Echoes (1999) - supernatural mystery

I think that'll tide you over for a while.

** In chronological order:
1) Whispering Corridors
2) Memento Mori
2: Wishing Stairs
4) Voice
5) A Blood Pledge (or Suicide Pact)

Each can be watched as a standalone, though. What these films have in common:
a) takes place at the same boarding school for girls (in span of fifty years)
b) features a slow-burn mystery
c) features supernatural, to various degrees (some are more supernatural-fuelled than some. Memento Mori is strictly not a horror film. It's a mystery, through and through. Whispering Corridors is a mystery-with-scares film).

It's very bleak and sad.

I think some people might have their roads mixed: can both be bleak and sad?

The Road (2011) - Horror/drama
The Road (2009) - Post-apocalypse drama with Viggo M.

Haven't seen the former but the latter I didn't like at all. Much preferred the Cormac McCarthy novel it was based on. That I would certainly recommend.

Another Cormac McCarthy miseryfest. Let's hope no one ever films Blood Meridian.

Just because the subject matter is profound doesn't make it a misery fest.

I didn't think No Country For Old Men was a misery-fest, just an intelligent and exciting thriller.

I liked "No Country for Old Men" but after reading Blood Meridian I'm starting to see a pattern.
"The Road" is a pretty feeble film based on ideas which sf books worked to death decades ago. Maybe Mr. McCarthy is too "literary" to bother with such humble fare.

Oh, my apologies. I did think the OP was asking about The Road (2011). My mistake.
