I think it's a basically just pop music primarily aimed for a younger audience.

I suppose its just upbeat, catchy pop music with a big chorus. Usually, but not necessarily, from a 'manufactured' artist and aimed at a young demographic
e.g. Carly Rae Jepsen - Call Me Maybe, Girls Aloud - Biology, Spice Girls - Stop, Alphabeat - Fascination, Nicola Roberts - Beat Of My Drum, Sugababes - Push The Button etc |

I wouldn't say 'Push The Button' is bubblegum pop.

Using recent songs, I'd say songs like Starships, Pound the Alarm, Dance Again, Live My Life, Call Me Maybe, etc.

I definitely would call it bubblegum pop. It's upbeat, catchy, repetitive, lacking much indepth meaning, and even the video is colourful and fun.
![]() Bubblegum pop to me would be defined as how I've described Push the Button up there. It's sickly sweet, harmless, fun, pure pop music. |

Pop music aimed at kids with little-to-no adult theme.. With very above the surface and safe lyrics...

I always think of Aqua whenever anyone says the term, and their lyrics were not always safe! Not sinister, but very nudge nudge wink wink and innuendo filled.

Very happy simple pop music that is little more than a nursery rhyme. The first real bubblegum music was the Archies Sugar Sugar, followed by The Partridge Family, Donny Osmond, etc.
People use the term today derogatory - One Direction, Justin Beiber, etc. |

Bubblegum pop was a style of pop music from the 60's and early 70's. People like the archies, the 1910 fruitgum co, extremely upbeat and extremely poppy. Sugar sugar is a great example but my favourite is 1,2,3 redlight.

I've never heard Justin Beiber either - apart from a few bars of "Baby, baby, baby, oww" or whatever it's called. I just dodge the places where stuff like that is likely to be played - Radio 1, TV chart rundowns, etc. If I go to the supermarket, clothes shopping, etc I've got my own music on my iPod going on.

Not sure. I don't think the term had been invented until Sugar Suger, the New Seekers and the Osmonds, Cassidy, etc. She Loves You and Please Please Me were certainly simple pop songs but they turned it around from Ticket To Ride onwards.

A British act aimed at tweens and kids would very rarely release such a song, I think... I always think S Club 7 or Steps.... Very cheesy faces, overdoing the dancing. Songs about things little kids want to hear - (Climbing mountains, swiming oceans, dancing all night) etc. But I personally wouldn't classify a song like "Call me maybe" as bubblegum - I don't like the song, but I wouldn't. I find bubblegum songs to be songs that sound as if a tween could have written them themselves... Like "Reach for the stars" So many childish cliches in one song, it's cringy. I'd even classify JLS as more bubblegum than Bieber... I think "Bubblegum" has changed in it's meaning through the years, though. |
