It was announced in the sun today that album sales have been the highest ever during the last year.Figures reveal that 237 million CD albums have been sold in the last year.Call me a cynic but record companies have been bleating on during the last year that illegally downloading albums would kill the music industry. The effect has obviously been in reverse with downloading stimulating sales.Even the report in the sun states that the massive gains revealed by the British Phonographic Industry have countered fears of illegal internet downloading killing off the market.
So record industry bosses when you are counting your profits perhaps you can stop whining about downloading-it's obviously doing your sales the power of good!

I'm surprised no one else has an opinion on this after all the bleating from the record companies. They're also trying to take the credit for the increase in sales as if they are great talent spotters. But it's mainly established artists such as Dido (yawn),Will Young and Robbie Williams who are shifting the records

Well, if they dropped the price of a CD down to around £5.99 for a new release they'd sell a hell of a lot more. I'd guess that sales have been driven up by online sites such as play.com who offer CDs a lower price (but still completely over-priced compared to the US). If the greedy bosses at the record companies dropped their prices by a few pounds I think they'd enjoy even bigger profits, considering it costs next to nothing to press a CD. I don't know about you lot but I'd buy a hell of a lot more @ £5.99 per CD.

The problem is though these figures will probably make the record companies more complacent than ever.I can remember 10 years ago when they were pushing for the £15 CD.You'd have to be a mug to pay that!

Well if you are not into mainstream chart music and you want to buy a new release of a fairly unkown band the price is still around £15-16 in the shops so nothing has changed there.

you can imagine in the run up to xmas that the record shops will be exploiting plenty of people who are clueless about the price of CDs.They'll be whacking the price right up!

think it's important not to lump all record labels in as one big greedy monster - the majors are, yeah but there's loads of brilliant independent labels putting out great music and struggling to sell it due to the media (radio/tv/press) being largely controlled by the money of the majors.
there may have been a lot of album sales but a lot of indie labels are folding or seriously in trouble due to poor sales.

and singles continue to decline.

The number 40 best selling single of 1997 sold the same as the current number 2 best selling single of this year so far!,
Even by the end of the year when Band aid go top, this will still mean the third best selling single of 2004 will only sell the same as the fortieth best seller of 1997!.

you're right. The majors usually buy the indie labels out when they're struggling so they can control more artists after the hard work's already been put in
