Would a Student House work on Corrie?

Was just thinking about dynamics on The Street and the fact that Manchester has a large student base, would it be feasible to have a house share with students residing here?

Do you think this would work? What storylines could be brought in with this in mind? Would this be too similar to HollyOaks?

Discuss.

They tried it once. Rita bought the house that Sunita and Carl currently live in. Her tenants were her foster daughter Jenny Bradley and her friend, Felicity, known as Flick.

No.7. was a student house for a couple of years from 1990, owned by Rita and rented out to students.

Originally Jenny Bradley and Flick Khan lived there, then Flick left and Angie Freeman moved in who was studying fashion design.

Curly Watts moved in at some point in early 1991 when Jenny left the street. I think that Curly bought the house sometime in 1992.

In answer to your question, I'd love to see another student house on Corrie.

Ah ok, so would this work in today's world, say with a group of 3 to 4 students, different backgrounds and back stories. I think it could have potential?

I don't think they know what to do with No. 13 - this could be turned into student accommodation. I'd really like to see it happen.

I did think this, but you have to think about the difference in surroundings, and the different characters to interact on Coronation Street to that of HollyOaks. I think a modern update on the student house idea would work really well on Corrie. I think Manchester has a larger student demographic than the leafy suburbs of Chester.

I think it could work, would introduce some new younger cast and have some characters that are not going to be stuck in a dead end factory job. In reality Coronation Street and the surrounding area would be full of student lets with students studying at Salford University.

No.13 would be perfect and they could convert the front room into an extra bedroom, allowing 3 students to live there.

This needs to happen, Corrie!

Very interesting thread indeed. It would bring a very relevant and fresh dynamic to the Street. I hate the fact that the few Corrie teens who actually have actually gone to Uni (e.g. Ryan and Amber) have only lasted a couple of years before being booted out for partying too hard. Lets have a set of motivated and ambitious young people who work hard for their dreams.

This was my thinking precisely. Manchester/Salford students who want to pursue their studies and have ambition. 18-25 year olds not working in a corner shop, takeaway, hairdressers. There would be scope for lots of interesting stories, student debt, protests, exam stress, party culture, student/ teacher dynamics. Also location filming on campuses could be done too.

If they wanted to be realistic, I think they should have a house full of migrant workers. They did have that Polish woman a while back, didn't they?

But five minutes ago, David and Kylie supposedly had a mortgage all lined up to buy Eileen's house. Why haven't they jumped in for No.13??

Exactly, this is not for current characters. It's soley to inject a lease of life into 3 to 4 new student characters. 2 guys, 2 ladies. 20-25 years of age. Not 18-19 as generally in Halls of residence for 1st-2nd years of Uni.

Maybe it would but I am discussing Coronation Street. And half of those are not students, if not all.

I'd quite like to see it happen, providing it was done in the right way. I doubt introducing four stereotypical students would go down too well on the street, but introducing four respectable students with drive and ambition, could work well.

Knowing Corrie lately, one of them would be carrying a dark secret with them - probably involving Stella in some way. Maybe Karl's illegitimate child?

After Xin was used as a plot device last year, it'd provide a good opportunity to include a new regular Chinese character, but with the student house setting, there'd be very little chance of a proper Chinese family.

Still, number 13 could do far worse than having students move into it.

We had Tyrone, Tommy and Tina flat sharing not that long ago so it would be pretty similar to that.

I dunno. When I was at Uni I was hardly home. Clubbing every night, trying to make it to lectures every day, weekends at mates / boyfriend's house / my parents. Never ate at home either, would never ever have gone to a pub like the Rovers. Basically if some students ended up living there they'd be really unrealistic as they'd end up dating on the street or going in the pub or suddenly being amazing seamstresses and working at the factory.

The key thing about Corrie (or any soap) is the interaction between characters and with students and their whole 'other lives' (uni and all their mates, back home, boyfriends etc) I can't see it working well.

I admit they are valid points but it 'could' work, it just needs the right angles and story lines. If they could get access to campus grounds in Manchester and have more location shots. Maybe have one current street member integrated to a local Uni to link them. If they were focused, driven and ambitious students then they could easily stick to the local pub for the odd drink to relax rather than boozing in town. But then u can have more evening, night shoots, later episodes for 8.30pm or special weeks at 9pm to have more hard hitting plots.
