Word adds space under paragraphs by default. There is a simple checkbox to turn it off.

There's also a toolbar icon for line spacing, just click it and drop down to the option to 'remove space after paragraph'.
That nonsense is the single biggest annoying default setting for me in Word 2010. |

Why would you not want a line space between paragraphs?
If you hit return rather than allowing words to wrap, then that means start a new paragraph. Like here. Spacing between paragraphs makes it easier to read. There is nothing worse to read than a solid block of text. Unless I have totally misunderstood your problem. (PS: I have cheated here with extra returns to narrow the margins, otherwise each paragraph appears as a single line.) |

Half unrelated question, I'm using a different font that I installed myself and whenever I use punctuation, all the following text changes to Times New Roman and I have to keep changing it back. How do I stop that?

I have always used shift-return to avoid the paragraph space. I've not found it particularly onerous.
