im not sure it was a conspiracy theory. Id wager that ALL companies will seed their own leaks when it suits them. Marketing seems like a bit of a game for the big companies really. With regards to this current situation Google/Android is getting a lot of press with the Nexus 7 and Jelly Bean so Apple 'leak' a little reminder that the iPhone 5 and iPad mini are coming ..... And thats not a dig at Apple as Im sure that Google, Samsung, Microsoft etc all do the same thing

So what is that apparent crime in Apple making future intentions known?

You're taking it as read that there really is an iPad Mini. No-one knows. It's believing stuff that isn't necessarily true that was the reason for the conspiracy theory comment - like people who believe the moon landings were fake.

I actually think they would be daft NOT to release an iPad mini. Now owning a 10" and 7" tablet I have to say i think the 7" will get more use.

I would imagine that it will 'replace' the ipod touch.

I think for once Apple have missed the smart move to fill the smaller screen (and lower budget) market and are in the unusual position of being the 'late entry'.

I very much doubt it. The nexus 7 tablet isn't the first 7 inch tablet. Apple don't go for the lower end of the market anyway. Cheap and cheerful isn't their thing.

People who think there is going to be an ipad mini are going to be very disappointed in September when it doesn't come out. A bit like last year.

It would make no difference at all if Apple did launch a smaller device. No-one else sought to register any design rights in relation to tablets, so only direct counterfeiting would be actionable.

Apple's design rights don't specify the exact form factor, only the look and feel. In fact, the Galaxy Tab 7.7 is currently banned Europe-wide due to Apple asserting its tablet design rights, so they clearly are applicable to smaller form factors.

I wasnt suggesting the nexus 7 was the first 7" tablet at all just that its currently getting a lot of press and selling in numbers - which few other Android tablets have managed.

The nexus may be cheap but it isnt 'cheap and cheerful'. Quad core Tegra 3, resolution somewhere between iPad 2 and 3, NFC etc etc. rumour is that the 8gb model is making a loss but that Google are trying to grab the market prior to Kindle 2 and (potentially) iPad mini.

An iPad mini would only really be the same as an iPod touch 'XL' wouldnt it ?

Admittedly Apple currently like to charge high prices for their underspecced units [dives for cover] as they know a certain group of people will pay, but I would be surprised if they didnt go for the iPad mini. Id wager they wont price it as low as the Nexus 7 though ......

The Nexus 7 certainly can't be considered a low-end device.

I think the iPad mini will definitely make an appearance soon, but anyone thinking it'll will be a similar price to the Nexus 7 will be sorely disappointed.

I think the iPad 2 will be discontinued and replaced by the iPad mini. Same resolution and specs as the iPad 2 but with a 7.85" screen. Price will remain at £329 (with maybe a £279 8GB one).

One problem i see with the iPad mini is Apple's use of the 4:3 aspect ratio. This will make it more unwieldy than the Nexus 7 and it won't be pocket-sized, but is probably not a big problem.

I don't see any real problem with a 4:3 ratio if they stay with 1024X768 resolution.
Go higher and widescreen becomes more an attraction.
The Nexus is not pocket sized either.

As to "low market end" it is surely lack of any reality that inhibits real discussion

Quad Core
IPS Retina display
Price Point £249

When they announce it remember what I predicted.

But which definition of retina ? The original one ? The revised one or a whole new one ?

I think Apple are only bringing out an Ipad mini to see if they can rival the new Google Nexus 7 tablet that came out just under 2 weeks go.
Price for the new Ipad mini will have to be under £300 if they want to rival the Nexus 7.
Last week the only place that you could get the Nexus 7 was from Tesco Direct.

I'd go with along with an 8" 1080p screen.
Retina of course, with GPS and made of plastic.

Surely creaky gadgets have more personality.

Doesn't sound like Apple at all.

The price is more low end, that's what I mean. It's very competitively priced for what it is. There are a lot of other android tablets which are more expensive.

Why bother with the ipad 3 with those specs?

What rumours actually back this up ? Normally we would have normal manufacture leaks but I've yet to see anything solid. I've just read there only just buying parts and it's September announcement, that really does not fit with them normally releasing not long after. So that source it's probably load of rubbish.

Don't get me wrong, I't does seem like a likely move but the lack of any credible leaks suggest that some people maybe disappointed.
