Samsung Galaxy S-II Android Update

My phone picked up an Android update yesterday, now reporting Android 4.0.4. Does anyone know what this was about?

The info screen referred to security and stability enhancements, but I didn't learn it by hard. Should have captured a screenshot. I'm surprised this forum isn't abuzz with the usual avalanche of "me too" and "doesn't work for me" messages.

I got this update on my unbranded phone yesterday. I was away to contact Samsung tech support as I have had a number of problems since updating to 4.0.3 (phone randomly switching off and sudden battery % drops) and I thought I had better connect it to Kies just in case there had been an update and was surprised to find there was. Hopefully it will fix my problems.

I never had reason to complain about ICS on this phone, and can't report a difference after applying the 4.0.4 update. Presumably it's better, and it doesn't appear to have gone for the worse.

Now waiting for JB and Google Now... Might be a very long wait though.

Think thats only if your rooted and using a custom 4.04 rom.The official update wont be a problem and even if it is your still under warranty.

I don't know. I got it from O2. I think it would be locked to 02.

And the update came over the air yesterday.

Is it just me or has the screen's brightness changed in 4.0.4? Normally have the brightness turned down all the way and it was still ok for me to see everything. But now it seems too dark. Not a major problem, just wondering.

Sorry, I have to post a 2nd message, but for some reason my browser didn't let me edit the first one.
I noticed I can't change the brightness anymore in the notification bar by swiping left or right.

I haven't noticed any change in overall brightness since the update. Changing the brightness via the notification bar isn't working for me either now.

The stock ICS kernel has a bug which can cause a hard brick if the phone is fully wiped using a custom recovery like CWM.

The application of a modded kernel first though means that the phone can be safely wiped and the downloaded and updated stock rom can be installed via Odin. This overwrites the modded kernel with the stock kernel and removes root.

Ok, so I am on 4.0.4 now with stock kernel, to downgrade or ROM I would install CF root then wipe and install whatever ROM, correct?

Yep thats about it. Any modded kernel (doesn't have to be CF root), flashed with Odin in download mode removes the bug and makes it possible to safely wipe in recovery.

I got my update for my unlocked, unbranded international Galaxy Note last night.

The pop-out video feature is cool, but ultimately useless and the "Sign to Unlock" feature is persnickety at best.
