Nightbreed (1990)

This boring and generally hopeless Clive Barker movie has been resurrected and (gulp) made longer. A Blu-Ray release has been threatened.
Sometimes dead is better.

This month's "Empire" gives details about the restoration. It seems a video copy of the full version had been on a shelf for over 20 years but no one noticed.
I'm still hoping for a decent remake of "Rawhead Rex".

There's a really good article on this upcoming release in this months Empire - the version we've seen was hacked to pieces by producers and this version has the blessing and approval of Clive Barker, is about an hour longer and fleshes out a lot of the characters to make a more balanced movie.

Plus the reaction has been positive so I'll keep an eye out for it.

EDIT: What Ironjade just said above

I guess im in the minority cause i loved it lol saw it when first released along with misery and i really enjoyed it,had a bit of everything, monsters, action, horror, something a bit unusual, theres been petitions for years trying to release the "lost" footage and im so glad its coming out now, from what i understand it was a barker fan who found the footage in the studios vault,3 diff cuts were found but the longest one was the last discovered clocking in at nearly 150+mins.

Never saw the film, but I remember playing the game on my Commodore Amiga.

It was crap.

I remember being really excited when this came out because it was a Clive Barker movie, and being quite disappointed when I saw it.

It wasn't Hellraiser, but then it also wasn't Rawhead Rex.

It is abysmal but Barker went on to prove he can repeat such a piss-poor nadir with the lamentable ( ) Lord of Illusions.

The longer he lives the more Hellraiser looks like a total fluke. Are we absolutely sure he really directed it.....?

Cliver Barker is a great writer but poor film director, with the exception being Hellraiser ofcourse. Even that isn't a great movie.

I rather liked Lord of Illusion but Hellraiser was scuppered by the producers trying to make us believe it was set in the US. Impressive if gruesome fx aside, it was nothing special. A former colleague of mine, who did all the animated lightning around the puzzle box, said he'd never worked so hard in his life.

I think a great monster like Rawhead Rex deserved better than he got in his feeble film outing. His first appearance, bursting out of his tomb, is impressive but after that it's a train wreck.

I loves this film!! Was a huge Baker fan back then and loved this. But it did feel very cut.
Can't wait to see the new version. Also played the Amiga game which came free with the computer pack I got at the time. I found it impossible and couldn't play it!!'

Yes, that was feeble indeed. Despite that I still think it’s one of the best British horror films of the last 50 years. I even have a lot of time for the sequel, Hellbound with the superb Ken Cranham overacting wonderfully.

Met Doug Jones at a preview screening of Hellraiser 3 (IIRC) and the fact that he is such an affable chap kinda takes some of the fear out when rewatching Hellraiser!

Barker seems more interested in tattoos, goatees and cut-off t-shirts these days but as long as that keeps him away from the director’s chair I’m not complaining.

I met Kenneth Cranham once and asked him about Hellbound. He replied, "Why were you watching that rubbish?"

Hellbound is an incoherent mess, but it deserves some credit for being the most grotesque mainstream horror movie of its time, possibly ever.

Compared to games nowadays they are rubbish, but I remember really enjoying those games when my family first got our Amiga when I was about 7. Nightbreed and Shadow of the Beast 2 really petrified me and my younger brother though, especially the bit in the Nightbreed game where the main character is in a straight jacket and screaming.
