Youview remote volume control
RichGW
03-08-2012
Just got my new youview box having dumped sky after many years. Have to say I'm a bit disappointed that the box seems less user friendly than sky. It may be a matter of getting used to it but it seems to take more button presses to do anything e.g. watch a recording.

Anyway to get to the point does anyone know how to make the remote control the tv volume at all times like with sky? It's going to drive me mad with my wife getting confused and turning the box right down and the tv right up!

Thanks but I'd already done that. I can get the remote to control the tv but I want to force the volume control to always control the tv volume rather than the youview box volume. At the moment it only controls the tv volume if you press tv first.

Volume punch-through is not supported I am afraid. One option is to look at universal multi-device remotes that do.

That's really surprising and annoying. I'd have thought it would be standard these days. I've had sky for 7 years and naively thought that others would ave caught up with what they were doing over 10 years ago.

Not standard on any of my devices. If you want sky features then there's only one place you should be looking.

You're not the first person to say that. I read a review the other day and the reviewer complained about this exact thing and put it down as a negative.

What are you referring to as a 'Sky feature'? After all the time they took to get YouView into the shops, the least they could have done was make the user experience the best available. The OP isn't the first person to mention things like recordings being awkward to access and the order of how programmes are stored etc. These things aren't 'Sky features' they're just YouView fails at the moment because they should have had all these things nailed by now instead of just rushing it out in time for the Olympics.

I think it'll be a fantastic service in the future but right now it's not worth £299 and it's not worth entering into a brand new landline & broadband contract just to access free catch-up that's readily available anyway. Also don't think anybody in their right mind would pay for channels that they can't record (especially when they're being delivered by a service making a massive deal about on-demand and watching on your own schedule!). Maybe when they've ironed out the little issues and added a range of apps and services to sit alongside then it will start to look really interesting. For the time being though, my Sky box is staying put!

How certain are you that some features are not protected by Sky - I know they are not like Gemstar .. but there are Rights involved.....

My One For All and Harmony universal remote controls support volume punch-through, None of the remotes supplied with any of my AV kit from various manufacturers that even allow you to control the TV as well do.

My parent's virgin media remote has volume punch through.

I was a bit hesitant getting youview at such an early stage but it was launched a day or 2 into my 30 days Sky notice. I was thinking of getting freesat but went with youview as it had all catchup services. It's just a bit disappointing paying £300 for a brand new box and finding it slower and less user friendly than the sky one I've had for years.

Also what's with the boot up time? Even with eco mode off you see a 'nearly ready' screen for what seems like an age when you switch it on.

I don't know if this helps anyone, but my talktalk youview box can toggle from box to TV volume control by pressing OK and V+ (or V-) together until talktalk button flashes.

Remote volume controls should default to affecting the power amp not the input devices, or at least be settable to do that. Should be a no-brainer for designers but some seem to have faulty brains. That means TV volume (or optionally a separate power amp if one is connected but that's less important as fewer people have them).

Tuner box volume e.g. Youview should have output volume changeable via an extra button press or setup menus, to enable users to equalize volume from their various boxes feeding into their TV - the lack of that is a failing of Sky + HD. So they both have missing features - designer faulty brain syndrome.

Apparently there will be an update soon to speed up the boot up time

Hi, the Toss, Thank you so much for that info. I have been trying for ages to do just that. It had taken me a couple of days to find out how to control my old TV using my new YouView controller and then I could only control the box volume and not the TV volume, you have solved my problem and now I can control whichever I like.
Many many thanks,
SFC

If you got your YouView box from TalkTalk, it will be a Huawei box. The link that was entered above is for the Humax box. This is the link for the Huawei box:
http://help2.talktalk.co.uk/tv/can-i...-control-my-tv
It will enable the remote to control your TV (i.e.. switch it on and off and adjust the volume)
