Hi doods - not watching it yet, we're watching the athletics, I'll probably watch later so I can FF if necessary - ie every time Ashleigh speaks.

Not enough people are interested but cat owners need educating to prevent it, cat bells, curfews and making sure they're fed etc.

There are lots of reasons for the decline in bird numbers but no-one really knows how much is down to cats.

I am staunchly anti-pesticides of all kinds.

Declining bee population is far more of a worry. And the biggest single factor in that is overuse of pesticides.

Noone ever controls a cat, thy go out when they want and usually come in when they want and noone is interested in what it does when it's out.

I have a cat living each side of me, they know they aren't welcome and can look out when we see them.

I would think the roads these days kill more animals than ever before, in fact, unless they can fly they are going to get run over.

Either way there's no a good chance of survival.

Bee's are probably declining because of a couple of reasons.

One being that most of the land now is agriculture, nothing really for the bee's, most of the flowers grown now are the wrong type for the bees as they can't get the nectar out.

my little blossom had a bell until he got too old to bother it's nature though, like cheetahs and small antelopes, not manufactured something-icides.

bb tonight was ok, towards the end when they'd finished repeating.

i still don't understand (and then i'll let it lie) why the alarm was going off and therefore the minute had passed, and both conor and luke pressed the buzzer during the alarm. so neither were within a minute which would mean they both returned to the house and the final prize remained the same.

Research has shown pesticides are responsible for the decline in bees.

there was a bit on countryfile that said the same, and they had a farmer who let a part of his field (some path down the side next to a hedge) to a beekeeper who set up some hives.

i get the impression pesticides are becoming unpopular even with farmers.

and gemo, i need a chicken in my kitchen to eat the slugs soon as they appear i never realised they ate them.

Declining habitats, varroa mite's (here from asia in the last 20 yrs) and pesticides are the three pronged attack on bees causing colony collapse in bees in Britain. At least we can do something about two of those through our own behaviour.

Bee "friendly" plants in our gardens, no pesticides, introduce wild habitat back to areas of farm land, the mites will need another solution.

Cat owners can be eductated, many do stop their cats going out at sunset and sunrise etc. It's a message that needs to get through.

It is nature but there has to be a balance. Cats predate birds, bird numbers are hugely declining so cat owners should be educated to know what they can do to reduce the damage.

Big brother didn't want them both back in the house for a start.
BB makes the rules so they can do what they want.
The HM's didn't know how much was on offer till the money stopped counting anyway.

Blame the farmers then, and if they don't use it there won't be any food anyway.

But they don't use pesticides when trees/plants are in flower, so what is the pesticide on?

is it just cats though? i could see maybe if many more people own cats now than, say, 20 years ago? i'm not sure that's true though because in the 80s we had lots of cats in our garden but also masses of starlings.

could there be other contributory things like concreting over front gardens, development of fields on the outskirts, new developments not having long back gardens like house plots used to (because then they can fit more houses in), and a bit of a lack of trees in town generally because they cause subsidence to buildings.

i don't mind being corrected, but i'm not sure whether the decline of birds is down to one thing i.e. cats. the bees reason sits better, to me, because that's massive areas covered in chemicals.

Not sure how the pesticide effects the bees?

I have a few flowers that the bees like, but i mainly grow what i can eat.

And educating cat owners isn't going to happen.

Pesticides stay in the soil Hicky, in the air and on any vegetation. Different plants flower at different times, the bees might not be after the sprayed crops themselves but they still have to travel through sprayed areas.

It's not a case of blaming farmers, they are supplying food for a demand, but we're biting the hand that feeds us. Organic is the way everyone should go because without bees we're all buggered. No bees, no food. It's quite a stark choice really.

I saw it, and in just one series there was open racism from various people against various "races", deliberate nastiness against poor people, deliberate nastiness against rich people, homophobia and double the amount of bitching. It was great.

I keep losing the connection so i am doing one post at a time. (again)

Decline of birds isn't solely down to cats doods. Or even he biggest problem but when numbers are in decline, every little will help. Including bird tables safe from cats, feeding during winter, providing water source etc. Harsh winters, reduced habitats, viruses & diseases etc (see the link) but no-one really knows what the biggest problem is but they'll all contribute.

There are less cats and less birds now. Cats are not the primary cause of bird death (and it is nature, same as any meat eater )

I don't follow you sorry.

What flowers, you don't get fields of flowers.
A few gardens isn't going to keep a hive of bees going.

If pesticide was in the air it would only be for a few minutes, the wind would move it, can't see it bothering anything flying.
