I know it's not looking good for a winner's story as such, once these channels have made their decisions they're very hard to budge. I've lent a bit of support to the FB campaign, signing the petition and we had a bit of lighthearted fun at C5's expense yesterday but I haven't gone as far as Emailing anyone on the matter.
I've done it because, to me, it's not about Luke Anderson the BB winner. From reading the Transgenderzone BB blog it's so obvious that the trans community is screaming out for more positive representation, especially of female-to-males. If everyone brushes Luke aside then that would be a golden opportunity lost. By speaking out to C5 I feel like I'm saying that there would be an audience for this type of personality on mainstream TV. We don't bat an eyelid about gay celebrities any more, the same should be true for transsexuals or any other minority.
I've often mentioned on FB that he shouldn't wait for anyone to give him such opportunities, he should go out and make them for himself. He could put his own videos on YouTube, write a book, set up a website and so on to get across whatever message he wants the public to hear. Maybe he feels it's important to discuss his past so other transsexuals can learn from his experiences. Maybe he feels it's more important to focus on the future and show people that you can go through reassignment and come out of it a better, fully rounded person, an ordinary bloke or woman who just so happens to be trans. If his story's compelling enough, someone will pick it up and take it forward.
Once the excitement of the honeymoon period settles down and cold hard reality kicks in, hopefully Luke will be able to take stock and decide how best he wants to move on. Now, exactly 1 month on from winning, he's said he's much more at ease with accepting the girl he used to be so that's a massive step forward for him. Even if he decides he'd rather not be a high-profile media personality and would rather go back to being a chef who got all he needed with his own personal victory, there are still plenty of ways he could engage with those of us who supported him and are interested in what makes him tick.
