You have 2 options

1. If under warranty can get it repaired
2. On house/contents insurance
3. Ask Apple - £45.00

£119 is the out of warranty service cost in the apple store. Warranty would not cover a smashed screen although if your friend gets a nice genius they may be able to blag a free swap but it's by no means guaranteed.

They may be able to get it repaired cheaper elsewhere although an apple repair would preserve any existing warranty or give a 90 day warranty if fewer than 90 days remain or the warranty has expired

Apple said to my sister the warranty does not cover screens.

I couldn't believe how easy my sisters (IPhone 4) broke, she open the door of car (not moving) and it dropped out of her pocket no more than 2 feet of ground, and the screen smashed. You friend is idiot however not for breaking the screen

My niece broke the glass on her new iPhone, and the apple store replaced the phone for her free of charge.
I think it helps if you're a leggy teenage girl though.

Bear in mind that the "screen" is made up of two components: The LCD AND the "digitizer" which is the bit that makes it touch-sensitive.

It might only be the LCD that's borked but often the digitizer will be damaged too.

If you buy both you might find you could have saved a few quid if the existing digitizer is still okay or, OTOH, if you just buy the LCD and it turns out the digitizer is knackered you'll have to order one afterwards.

If it was me I'd just order both, together, and then, if it turns out the digitizer is okay, flog the spare one on eBay.

FWIW, you can buy iphone LCD/digitizers on eBay starting from £25-odd.

*EDIT*
Just saw the pic.
Given that the digitizer makes up the front panel of the phone, you're definitely gonna need both.

Also, how the hell did he do that?
I've seen iPhones shot with a shotgun that looked better than that.

Apple will probably charge about £160+ to fix it.

All he literally did was get out of his car and it fell out of his hand facedown. Cheaper for him to claim on his insurance (£65 excess) than paying apple

But will affect his premiums

Depends on the policy.

A lot of policies specifically sold for mobiles don't increase the premium if you make a claim.

Don't pay for anything until he's been into an Apple store to talk to them. He may get a free replacement. There's no obligation if he just asks.
