iPad 2 or 3?

Is it really worth the extra for a 3? I just got a 3 but my friend is about to get a 2 and reckons it's not worth the difference in money. Can anyone summarise the difference you get if you buy a 3 over a 2?

I believe that the 3 has a higher resolution screen and better processor ..... but how much of that extra processor is needed to push the extra pixels on the 3 I couldn't say. The 3 will also be supported for longer as apple has operating system fragmentation where the newest big headline features don't get enabled on older hardware.

Apart from that I couldn't say any more as I don't do apple stuff.

The main differences are the screen resolution and speed. See http://www.apple.com/ipad/compare/

edit: The forthcoming iOS 6 (possibly is September) will be supported on the iPad 2 except for Facetime over 3G and Siri. http://osxdaily.com/2012/06/13/ios-6...orted-devices/

There is also a rumoured smaller iPad which may or may not be announced soon. It should be cheaper.

The 3 also has more RAM [as well as a better screen, better GPU, and better (although IMO still pointless) camera].

The 3 is also available with larger storage sizes. The 2 is only available with 16GB of storage, whereas the 3 also has 32GB and 64GB versions.

Thanks for those explanations.

My iPad 2 has 32GB!

He was meaning if you now buy new, the iPad 2 is currently only available in 16GB even though it was initially available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB.

OK, didn't know that. Glad I bought mine in June.

June? Second-hand? Or lucky to get some left-over new stock?

Upon the release of the iPad 3 in March, the 32GB and 64GB iPad 2 models were discontinued.

Guess it must have been old stock. Its a 3g with 32GB.

I've got both. A 2 with 16gb & 3G and a 3 with 64gb & 3G.

If it wasn't for the fact that the 3 has more storage then I'd use the 2 all the time and let the kids use the 3.

Camera never gets used so that's irrelevant to me.

The 2 charges up in no time and the battery lasts for a long time.

The 3, due to the larger battery required to power the procesor and screen, takes forever to charge. In addition, regardless of the claims by Apple, the battery does not last anywhere near as long as on the 2.

Although the resolution on the 3 is noticeably better than that of the 2 it is largely pointless. The resolution on the 2 is more than adequate.

So if I was to upgrade from a 16gb + 3G iPad one (never used the 3G) should I go for iPad 2 with wifi + 3G or iPad 3 wifi only.

Just thinking of saving money with an upgrade with reference to the 3G issue.

If you've never used the 3G on your last iPad, there seems to be little reason to get a new one with 3G. Besides, you could do what many people with smartphones do and tether the iPad to that if you need to use it when there is no WiFi available.

True, I could use my iPhone to tether too (at cost obviously) or use mifi

What Stuart_h says. Seriously, always go with the latest model with Apple if you can afford it. They're very much into planned obsolescence. Plus the screen on the iPad3 is beautiful and something to behold!

This.

Don't pay for 3G if you never used it on the previous model. Better to get a larger capacity iPad 3 than a smaller iPad 2 with 3G.

Which network are you with and which tariff?

They have, AFAIK, started to move away from charging extra for tethering. O2, for example, includes tethering now with the tariffs introduced when the 4S was released.

I'm on orange and as far as a I can see any tethering is chargeable above my normal bundle.
