singles v albumns
Recent years have also seen a more marked schism between the teen pop market and the more mature album-buying mainstream.
So the best-selling singles of the year so far include tracks by Eamon, DJ Casper and Pop Idol winner Michelle, none of whom make much of a dent in the album chart. And the list of top-selling albums of 2004 to date is dominated by acts like Katie Melua, Scissor Sisters and Norah Jones - none of whom have reached higher than 10 in the singles chart. Only a few acts, like Usher and Anastacia, straddle both worlds. |

Singles: £3 (average) for 3 songs = £1 per song (and usually crappy remixes or rejected album tracks)
Albums: £10 average (now, it seems HMV etc.. have reduced priced loads), probably an average of 14 songs on albums = 71pence per song, including cool artwork, better tracks etc... Singles are aimed at teenagers (girls probably) who get pocket money and will go buy the latest shit CD single because it's not so expensive, hence the single charts being made up of absolutel bollocks! Albums are aimed at everyone, but people like Katie Melua, Norah Jones etc... are obviously aimed at an older audience, and apparently, 50% of their sales come from Supermarkets. I.e. older people are buying them, and they have more money to buy more than teenagers. Acts like Usher etc... are just promoted TOO much so people young people their albums because he's "cool and hip and is da bomb" to them
