Thoughts On Standing Ovations?
Going to start this thread with my thoughts on standing ovations first of all I would like to say for this years series I hope that they don't over use them like they did on The Voice and Idol, Joshua Ledet on Idol got around 12 through out the live shows it was so over the top the Idol judges had such low standards giving Heejun Han and DeAndre Brackensick standing ovations on heroes week I was starting to wonder if I was watching the same show as the judges. The Voice just as bad when it came to giving standing ovations the judges were just too nice.
Im not saying judges shouldn't give standing ovations Im just saying give them to performaces truly worthy of one, last years series of X Factor there were a few performaces In my opinion such as Amelia's The Show Must Go On and Craig's Jar Of Hearts that should have got a standing standing ovation. One thing I don't like is when the judges give an act a standing ovation just becouse it is the final such as Marcus when he sang Hey Ya I thought it was an absolutely awful vocal and another example Olly's reprise performace of Twist And Shout I thought it was his worst song choice of the series and the judges agreed on this when he sang it for the first time Louis said it was a silly song choice and he didn't like the silly dancing but when he sang it again in the final he got a standing ovation. Post your thoughts on what you think of standing ovation and performaces you think should have got one and performaces you think didn't deserve one. |

I totally agree with you. Sometimes I got really annoyed by some Standing O's because they were simply irrelevant to the performance like last years finals. I think that SO should be reserved for outstanding songs either vocally like Alex on Halleluja, Un-break My Heart or emotionally like Cher on Stay. Last year is was visible overused for some of the acts. IMO none of last years performances deserved it (thankfully there were not that many).

I think they don't give enough out, the contestants work SO hard and the sometimes the judges have the audacity to not stand up but say "that was the best performance of the night". -____-

Okay so my opinion, I don't watch idol or the voice but on XF, I don't mind standing ovations when someone really deserves it. I hated what Tulisa did, she hardly stood up for acts that weren't hers.. so annoying
As for the final.. I think the judges are sort of forced to stand up for both acts because they would be a bit conscious to say/do anything that would influence the public.. so to give the public total control on who should win |

Nobody except the special guests deserve standing ovations.

Agree. Last year there were so many performances that deserved it but didn't get one. Every performance in the final should get a standing ovation I think.

I didn't like Tulisa giving a standing ovation to her own acts almost every time. Just look at how many standing ovations Little Mix got for example. They had a few performances that were good enough for a standing ovation (ET, Don't Let Go), but they definitely didn't deserve them for almost every single performance they did. It's the same story for Gary and his acts and Louis' too, they gave too many standing ovations last series.

SO's should be for the acts who are OUTSTANDING and ORIGINAL!! Not for every single act and especially if they are in the final...as many of us know, they are often in the final due to them being more popular, not for the singing as last years final show was so, so!! Even Amelia wasn't cutting it IMHOn which was strange!!

It annoys me that the judges now give a standing ovation every time a contestant from a previous series performs on a live show. I think they first did it with Leona Lewis, which I felt was justified, but now it's like they feel obliged to do it for all their X Factor friends.

IMO a standing ovation should only be rewarded to the most sensational performances. Like really sensational. Leona doing I will alway love you or Burkey doing listen with Beyonce. Now they DESERVED it. Some Chimney sweep who's just average singing an average song does not deserve it. It's completely ludicrous.

agree..
When Simon Cowell was on American Idol, he gave I think only one (!) standing ovation - when Adam Lambert sang "Mad World". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfR0JGWX62E (actually think the live performance wasn't worthy of one; but the studio version definitely was - amazing! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QIBd42_T2w) Compare that to X Factor, where he gives contestants in his category standing ovations all the time... |

I went with my sister to the Liverpool auditions Geri was the guest judge. Im not one for standing ovations if they are good ok...we were just on the verge of leaving when this lad called Chris came on. He was just dressed normal nothing out of the ordinary...Had a bit of a story mates taking the mick out of him for singing and he was to scared to try out for XFactor..he even brought his nan with him...On hearing that we looked at each other and said ....heres the sympathy vote...
Well he set off singing and take my word he was bloody brilliant and it takes a lot to impress me.last time was when SuBo walked on the stage and sarted singing.... He got a standing ovation from everyone at the Echo Arena and he was so over whelmed by the reaction to his singing. Ive seen him on the trailers for the show. Some people do deserve it some on the other hand ... ![]() So look out for Chris from Liverpool.... |

The standing ovations are ridiculous.
I bet if you sat there booing while everyone else stood clapping they'd throw you out, whereas the opposite would be fine. |

the SO are ridiculous. I would guess there's been more standing O's for people that havent deserved it than there has been for people that do.

oh my word they are SOOOO overused already!! we're only 2 shows in! it's just got to the point where they dont mean anything anymore.
standing ovations should ONLY be used when an act do a performance that is truelly in another stratosphere and completely takes your breath away. it should make you go "oh my god.......that was AMAZING!!!!!!", not, "welllllllll, sounded better than the other dross". i don't mind the judges giving them when a guest star is performing their new single or whatever in the lives - it's polite. but for the contestants? no! |

I have nothing against the idea of SOs if they are sincere but the marketing hype that surrounds X Factor requires that each series is perceived to be bigger, better and more dramatic than the last. So when they give an SO, they need to give at least as many in the next series even if the performance doesn't deserve it. The eventual end point is for everyone who gets to boot camp getting a standing ovation.
So no, I don't really like them. Can't say they really bother me too much though. |

SO's when given by the mentoring judge mean nothing whatsoever. If all 4 judges give a SO though, generally the performance is great, and it's deserved... I think that's pretty much it really.

To be honest I kind of get why they over-do the SOs in the final. I mean one of them is going to win the damn thing, they sort of have to pretend their good.

I make my own opinion on the artist, but for some of them it must be the best moment of their life, they won't become famous and that is a memory to cherish and tell the court when they are trying to get their kids back.
I tried being nice,
