Back to the topic, I live locally to the O2 and everyone that's been to watch anything there has said theyre going to the O2, I wasn't even aware they had changed it until this thread
I'm not an avid Olympic follower but I have been watching every night pretty much. |

1)Originally it was the Dome or Millenium Dome. Anyone over a certain age knows that that was its original name and the huge story that went with it and how much it cost lol And of course that it was the home of the "Millenium Experience" come on who remembers that too?! All done for the Millenium celebrations of 2000. I believe there was a time when it held an ice show or something and even housed the homeless? But we tend to forget that bit.
Then......... 2)Then it became the O2 (why? because O2 pay millions a year to have it called that. It isn't owned by them though)................Anyway! It doesn't take rocket science to figure out that they couldn't have it called the O2 during the Olympics because of advertising! They can't charge companies a fortune to be games partners and then let a venue keep a name that would hand out free advertising! Therefore huge surprise they name it with a location style name, which keeps it simple. Then.............. 3)After the Olympics and Paralympics it will revert back to O2 (O2 don't pay all that money for nothing!) One day if someone else buys/rents/backs the place then it will get a new name. So to sum up....giggle....Original name was The Millenium Dome (The Dome for short) - Renamed the O2 (Full name - The O2 Arena) due to a contract and branding - Temporary name for the Olympics/Paralympics for advertising reasons is North Grenwich Arena - When Olympics is over it will revert to O2 And everyone breathhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ![]()

Brilliant!
On Radio Five Live's audience participation show 10 minutes ago, Mark Pougatch (one of their top sports commentators) wanted to refer to the O2/Dome whatever, and he couldn't remember its Olympics name! ![]() Yep, most people will have forgotten this boring nondescript temporary name soon enough, if they can even remember it now, and the sooner the better. |

'The round shaped, spaceship-like building that was built for the year 2000 and is now home to oxygen'. ![]() But chose the 'North Greenwich Arena' as it was easier! ![]() Since they couldn't use the name O2 or 'The Dome'. It should have been called just 'The Dome' for the Olympics, simple as that! |
