Old Ferguson tv

Don't know if anyone can help?

I had a Ferguson tv as young one that had a speaker either side of the screen. It also had a LED array that went up and down along with the sound. I think the colours were green and red. May of been yellow in the middle.

Just after a picture of anyone has one?

Many thanks

Itr sounds like one of the TX10 varients - they did some 'stereo' sets (only via an external stereo input) to go with the stereo VCR's (linear low quality audio only) of that period. If I remember correctly the input was via DIN plug, as it was pre-SCART.

I had one of these sets it came out in 1983 and I rented it from Radio rentals it had "supersound" simulated stereo , the following year 84 I rented a stereo VHS and you got the stereo sound track , these sets pre-dated Nicam and had the BBC went for FM stereo which I believe was what was used in Germany these sets would be ok I rember watching John Cravens newsround and his telephone rang and the sound came out the right speaker ! , Wimbildon was weird with the noise of the ball going from speaker to speaker in 85 I bought a Phillips TV with steresound to replace this , will need to look through old photos to see I have it , I think the rental was £15 per mounth in 1983 !

I don't think those Ferguson TV's had the German style decoder in them, it was stereo only from the DIN at the back.

I've got the plastic portable version of that somewhere (mono, non-teletext), awaiting some new convergence rings as this fool here tightened the current ones a bit too much - and smashed the (brittle!) plastic 'neck' that the tightening ring sat around.

Bit wierd for a stereo set, though isn't it? Stereo capability but only one in-built speaker.

EDIT: Ignore me, I've just noticed the other speaker.

Yeah those Fergusons never had any stereo decoder for A2 Zweitone, well the UK versions didn't anyway. As Nigel says they used a DIN connector and you had to use a Stereo VHS (that would have been linear Stereo rather than HiFi VHS at that time) or laserdisc player to get stereo sound out the TV otherwise you used the ambience fake stereo 'enhacement' button that made those LED's light up.

They didn't. though there was a Philips set model 3850 that had one with the auxiliary carrier at 6.242MHz on the assumption that a system I version of zweiton would use this frequency.

I had a Ferguson TX set which was similar to the one shown, I bought it in 1999 for £50 but it an odd smell come out when it was on, there was a small green light next to the picture tube inside the casing, it had flyback bars across the screen, sometimes it would malfunction and a thump on the cabinet made it work normally again, and the remote control would only work occasionally, I liked the old teletext graphics that it displayed and excellent sound, especially when used with a Pace 2200 Sky Digibox. I had to scrap the set in 2006 because I had no room for it.

While it might look a really silly thing to have - it was actually there for a VERY good reason. LED's make good voltage references, and that's what it was used for.

Incidentally, the colour is important, as different colours have different forward voltage drops.

They did occasionally fail - which was a great fault, because it was obvious as the LED wasn't lit any more

Was very similar to this.

But it had LED's above one of the speakers to indicate the noise level.

I know I was just using an example on how it looked.
