Bill Gates said the thing he is most proud of developing at Microsoft is Excel and I can completely understand that when you compare it to other spreadsheet packages.
As long as there are no decent office type apps on Android then my tablet will continue to be strictly fun and work will be done on the laptop.

If something comparable to excel and the rest of office comes out as an Android app then I may reconsider but I just can't see that happening any time soon.

I'm not bothered through - I like my tablet - it is my toy and it is for fun. Work is completely separate and that is what my laptop is for.

And not wishing to labour my point but this sums it all up beautifully. All these things are exactly what you want them to be for each individual purpose.

Because Ivy Bridge processors are x86 and powerful, therefore are capable of running a full version of Windows .
Windows NT (which is the base for XP) in 1993 could run on a MIPS CPU. This is quite similar to ARM being the RISC competitor.

Considering 250Mhz was the fastest you could get then, on the face of it, it looks like the likes of Tegra 3 is 16+ times as fast.

It is all down to what Microsoft chooses to give us.

I have a good desktop PC but bought a good laptop about 2yrs ago, paid about £700 for it and hardly ever used it really, it went weeks without being turned on sometimes..

Last autumn my brother in law mention his son wanted a laptop for xmas but they were struggling to afford a decent one, so i sold mine to him and bought a xoom with the money and I love it, and pretty much use it everyday....

i think that it will settle between an exenish split between Nexus devices and iPads to be honest. i think with the vast majority of smartphones now being sold having an Android OS people will gradually realise that if they have an Android phone then an Android Tablet is the best route (as is the case with an iPhone/iPad).
By the same token, people with a desktop PC or a laptop, might feel that a Windows phone and a Windows tablet have synergy. I think it's way to early to write off Microsoft. Their x86 tablet won't be out until next year.

I use Photoshop for some of the work I do, not all the time but even so in my opinion, it is going to be a long time (if ever) before it's going to be possible to do that on a tablet.
Eventually someone will do a good hybrid machine. A tablet that turns into a PC when docked. Ideally wirelessly: wireless mouse, keyboard and monitor, together with wireless charging.

The alternative is to have two (or more) devices, and keep their contents in sync. It's doable, but I think easier when all the devices have the same O/S and run the same software. Either way I think Microsoft is more likely to deliver this within, say, 2 years, than Google or Apple.

What happened with netbooks is that they started off cheap and simple, and then people wanted to do more and more with them, so they gradually became more powerful and more expensive. The same could happen with tablets.
