O2 Opt For Semi-Walled Garden For 3G
Everything Goes
30-11-2004
People wanting to wait till H2 of 2005 for O2's 3G offerings may want to think carefully. O2 will be using iMode for their 3G phones. This offers a semi walled garden service of official paid for content, although there are some unofficial sites as well. It is best to think of iMode as an updated WAP with paid for content and unofficial free content. You wont be able to access webpages, like you can do on Vodafone and Orange. Only content written for iMode will be viewable. O2 think this will be a great money spinner for them.

But surely, i-mode is backwards compatible with existing WAP sites as well. So the situation is no different to the current one, where a different set of settings are needed for mobile web access.

As O2 have said their first 3G products will be data cards for business users they will be offering a (seperately priced??) internet access service.

The mmo2 press release

does NOT indicate that i-mode is to be the EXCLUSIVE way of accessing the Internet via o2 3G.

I feel thet it will be an optional route rather like 02 Active is on WAP.

Chris.
