Android: why is my email data usage so high??
chadmendoza
08-08-2012
in one week my galaxy has used 100mb of data just on emails.

I hardly ever open any with an attachment unless i am connected to wi-fi.

i don't even open most of them -i just see the headers and delete 70-80%. of them on sight.

so why is the usage so high if its just text? my blackberry was never like this..

how do you know its email causing it ?

What volume of emails are you talking about, how many have attachments ?

What settings do you have on your e-mail client. Most give an option of how much of an e-mail to download and will only download the rest if you actually open the e-mail.

I'd install Onavo count from Google play.

It monitors your data usage program by program (and it's free too).

Get an anti-virus on there and do a scan.

whats "Background data" ?”

"Background data" means it is downloading emails to your phone without you opening the messages. So even if you never used email on the phone, a copy of all your inbox has been downloaded. This is very useful if you want to read emails on a plane or somewhere else with no internet connection, or if you just want to avoid any delay when you click to open a message, but it does use bandwidth.

You probably have your settings either as "push email" or checking the server very frequently. You can change this to once an hour, or whatever you prefer.

You should also have the option of limiting how much of each message is downloaded in background. This means that you will have the first page of text "in your phone", with the option to download the rest if you need to. This is very useful when there are very long email chains of messages where 99% of the text has already been received in a previous message, and someone has just added a comment and hit "reply all".

Finally, you should have the option t control how your phone treats attachments. Whether none, all, or only limited sized attachments are downloaded. Again, each option has its advantages and disadvantages, it really depends on your priorities. Try setting it not to download attachments in background, you will still have the option to download them when you open the message if you want to (and you are online).

With Android you have a huge amount of flexibility, but you do need to set it up how you want it to work.

It is VERY unlikely that the high data usage is caused by a virus. Android is based on Linux, a very secure operating system. Only if the user has downloaded app from somewhere strange and installed them is there a risk (as it is a new phone, I assume he hasn't done this).

Here is a well written article on this topic:

It is much more likely that his high usage can be reduced by adjusting his settings.

You don't need an anti-virus. And like the other guy said, i'd say it's cuz you have a lot of emails, and even if you don't open them, the phone still downloaded them for you, which used up your data.

Check the email app settings. You should have an option to only sync attachments via wifi or turn attachment sync off all together. I only use GMail and this has similar options.

An Anti Virus is not needed.

It is just the junk nature of HTML email.

Simply switch to IMAP if you can.
That way you will only get headers and nothing more.

Yes. It just monitors 3g usage, and ignores Wifi.
