Do the xbox 360 slims

Do the Xbox360 slims ever get red ring of death? my friend is claiming his got RROD but others have told me he dropped it. I'm pretty sure there hasn't been any recorded RROD on the slims but i could do with some peice of mind on this.

Not heard anything for the slims. But it's not inconceivable.
Think the RRoD was mainly caused by lack of decent cooling on the original 360s. Slims have a better fan and you can install games which keeps them cooler and saves the disc drive from extra wear and tear.

Thanks for that my xbox is pretty well ventilated it is on a shelf by itself no other electrical items near it , it has plenty of room to breath too plus my set up is near a window which is mostly open .

The 360s were designed specifically to avoid the RROD, the internals are completely different and the machine has an automatic shut down feature when it starts to get hot inside to prevent it.

In fact I've never even heard of a Jasper unit getting RROD. But the new 360s are certainly safe from it.

The 360S cannot actually have the RROD anyway as the ring has no red LEDs

Yeah they can still break and seize up however with all the bad publicity surrounding the 'red ring of death' buzz-words, MS changed the slim so that it cant technically display a red ring - it can still break down like the others used to though - you just wont get the red lights.

RROD was always a general hardware failure code - although 99% were likely due to the over heating problem.

New slims still fail, a proportion of electronics always does for various reasons - they just got the failure rate down to below the industry average (about 10%).

No Xbox 360 console can have a "red ring of death".

3/4 of a circle is not a ring.

It is my understanding that the cause of the RROD was a design oversight by microsoft when developing the Xbox 360 i.e. the motherboard was slightly too big for the casing meaning the motherboard would warp when it expanded due to heat.

I doubt it's even possible for microsoft to make that same mistake again.

My launch day 360 lasted for 3 years before it overheated and presented me with the dreaded RROD.
I have a slim now, and it seems to be 100% reliable. The heatsinking on the original was real 'wing and a prayer', and when it failed I took it apart to see for myself. Strewth - talk about a jury-rigged setup! No wonder it got hot.
The new one is much better sorted, and I don't think I've heard of a single failure. Obviously like any other electronic item they do fail, but the panic days are long gone.

The actual cause of the heating issue was from the game disc spinning very fast constantly. If you install the games then RROD should never happen. And yes, the slims can get RROD too, just the console dispays a red dot in the middle instead.

It wasn't so much that the board was too big - that would have been relatively trivial to fix. It's that the board was designed to get much hotter than it actually could stand as it was originally going to have the components soldered on with lead based solder. Lead based solder was banned in the EU (with other territories not far behind) during the development of the box and they switched to lead free solder, but without adequate testing that it was suitable for the heat produced by the box.

In many cases this was too much, causing microfractures, or simply allowing what would have otherwise been fairly normal warping under heat to push the processor or graphics chipset slightly out of their sockets.

This is why Microsoft's first go at fixing the issue was just a bloody big clamp over those components to try and hold them in better. There were other issues, but that seems to have been the main problem.

I would doubt that. Constantly spinning the DVD drive might cause the motor or the drive circuitry to fail, but it wouldn't cause enough heat to cause a motherboard failure. The source of the heat was the main CPU and the GPU, which were not adequately heat-sunk. This, combined with lead-free solder (as a previous poster has pointed out) was just too much.

I worked in the radio TV trade for 20 years, and we had a big surge of failures when the manufacturers changed to lead-free.

This is indeed correct.

The DVD drive was partly to blame, as due to where it was placed in the console, it effectively trapped heat around the GPU.

I got my RROD in August 2010, 21 months after beginning to install games on the hard drive.
