Moths

Hi all,

Over the last few weeks I've noticed quite a few moths in my kitchen, literally 3 or 4 every day. I thought nothing of it until I noticed the actually caterpillar things which they are formed from on the ceiling. I have no idea where they are coming from as there isn't any rotting food in or around the fridge, however they have flown out of a cupboard where I keep flour etc, could they be coming from there?! I'll have to have a clear out over the weekend to check everything, but any ideas where they are coming from and why?

Many thanks

We've had a similar problem, lots of moths in the lounge since early spring. We tried burning off the chimney (a bird fell down it last year, we have a guard now so they don't - but the moths may have been breeding on the body), that helped for a while but they are still around. I've ordered a couple of moth boxes now, which are supposed to attract & trap the males.

They are supposed to not like lavender, so you could try some lavender posies or essential oil too.

Burn lavender oil, they hate it. The smell is bit overpowering though, but better than moths everywhere.

And your carpets if they are wool. I've just had to have my front room carpet replaced because of extensive moth damage. Despite this and using pesticide sprays I'm still finding them in the house.

Next time you pass a drycleaners pop in and buy spray made with cedar oil and maybe some cedar wood balls.
There is a real clothes-eating moth epidemic going on in the UK.

The moths in your cupboard are from grubs feeding on any dry food stuffs (not rotting meat /veg) .
The grubs climb up to the ceiling to pupate and turn into the adult moths .
Flour itself is probably too fine for them to eat but they will be in any packets of rice , breakfast cereal , lentils , biscuits etc you have stored in there. The grubs can chew through thin packaging .

I had an infestation in my lounge several summers ago and eventually traced it to a forgotten bag of hamster food tucked away after the hamster died .

I thought as much since some were in the cupboard where the dry stuff like flour and rice is kept. I'll sling the lot in the bin at the weekend and have a good clear out, hopefully that will get rid of them.

You can call your local council to arrange pest control to have a look.

Just cleared out the kitchen cupboard and it's seems flour was the cause of the little buggers! Chucked everything out and hoovered and anti bacced everything, so hopefully that's the end to that!
