Advice needed for Tablet choice.

I am looking to get an Android Tablet. Just for use in pubs etc with wi-fi. I have no clue and being a pensioner can't afford too much. I have seen some on Ebay around £50 and wondered if they would be any good. Also at some point I would like to connect a gps receiver. Sorry if this has been asked before, but I am a complete novice in the field.

£50 is a bit too cheap, you'll end up with a load of rubbish that won't work in the way you desire and just end up wasting the money.

Stretch to £159 and get a Nexus 7. It has built in GPS and will do everything and more than you desire.

My question is what do you want to use it for ?

Hi. Thanks for the replies. It is mostly to wi-fi connect to check emails etc when I am away. Plus i have some kindle books. And lastly if needed to connect to a gps receiver to see where I am.

I am guessing that if you want to use it down the pub then you want some relativity smalll, i.e. 7" device. At the cheaper end of the market there are some no name brands for around £80 which have good reviews on amazon, (not sure if it has GPS though)

At the upper end of the market is the nexus 7 for around twice the price, but much quicker, good after sales support and will support future upgrades and includes GPS.

Thanks to all. That Amazon seemed to be exactly what I wanted with a lot of good reviews. So, I bought one!! No GPS but I can always add a receiver when I get around to it.

You do realise that tablet isn't actually from Amazon, don't you. It's being sold by a seller on "Amazon Marketplace", which means a third party called 'Mary Lou' is selling a tablet and just using Amazon's payment system. It'll be up to 'Mary Lou' to ship it to you, and it'll be up to 'her' to support and solve any problems if you have them.

Yes I did spot that. Thanks tho.

I believe this is wrong. You might want to double-check with other members of the forum; I believe that today's Android OS won't support generic USB GPS radios.

Note the distance selling act, under which you may change your mind and return the product no questions asked if (a) the above is correct and (b) GPS is important to you.

I second the recommendation for the Nexus 7 (but acknowledge the difference in price).

Thank you. I will look into that and report back.

I'm hoping that the charger that comes with it doesn't have an American plug, like in the illustration in your link!

Whoops, me too. I expect that I can sort that tho. I will let you know when I get it.

They often do have that plug, but nearly always come with an adapter that allows it to be used in a U.K. socket.

OP, let us know what you think of your tablet after you've used it for a bit.

Pretty well tested now. No bluetooth, no gps, 3g works with external dongle. Found Opera to be the best browser with it. Although it has it's own browser, prefer Opera. No worries with wi-fi. Tested it in my main pub and it was more sensitive that my Samsung Galaxy. Charger is fine. Email fine but had to put in my own settings. So dead chuffed at mo.

Hi Geof. I got that one from Amazon. I tethered with no problems. The dongle was just a network 3 one which I already had.
