Low monthly contract vs PAYG
My wife is about to come to the end of her contract with Virgin [ well, end of October ]. She isn't a massive mobile phone user but does like to have a fiddle and a few apps etc and her top budget is between £10-15 monthly.
Virgin have offered her a couple of phones for this rate, including the Galaxy Ace. She isn't convinced at staying with Virgin, and isn't sure whether to take a new contract at all. I have been out of the PAYG scene for a few years, so if anyone has any tips on good deals at the minute, please point me their way. I'm sure some places pretty much do monthly deals which you can change at anytime? The only drawback I assume, is the PAYG obviously needs you to buy the phone and unless you can afford a half decent one, it's hardly worth doing. So the alternative is to find a low contract amount where you can get a half decent little phone, it is still an option. She is open to any network apart from 3! |

Do have a look on the Tesco Mobile site, they have cheap contracts, which can also be capped if needs be...alot include data too, so your wife would be happy with that....gl..xx
Also, forgot to add that you can order the contracts online..hence not having to speak to anyone...lol Last edited by monsterroony : 11-08-2012 at 10:58. Reason: forgot to add something |

Thanks...I will check them out...
Strange that Virgin are charging £15 for a Galaxy Ace and Nokia Lumia 710 and I have just seen those on Carphone Warehouse for £10 and £7.50 respectively....yes, Virgin give more internet use-age but that is quite a bit different still. I will see what Tesco has to offer! |

I think the capped bit is good...how does that work? If they reach the limit, does it just stop working?! My wife has had a Blackberry, I think she wants a change. Looking at the Lumia 710, that looks quite a nifty little phone for the money...

Your phone won,t stop working, it just means that you would need to get a top up, but as you say your wife doesn,t seem a big user, so probably wouldn,t reach the limit..x

Tesco use the O2 network and, apart from a recent network problem, it has been a better signal for me than Virgin ever was where I live.
They have a wide selection of handsets on PAYG if your wife wants to go that way, & if she wants to unlock from the network it costs £20 OR wait one year from activation and she can request it for free ![]() I have 2 PAYG sims from Tesco. Both have a minimum topup of £10. One for the Lite tariff http://phone-shop.tesco.com/tesco-mo...itetariff.aspx which has calls for 8p per min + Texts for 4p OR buy one or more monthly bundles costing £5 each for 5000 texts, or 150 mins, or 500MB data. (I make no phone calls unless I have to, hence this is my emergency phone). My second one is a Triple Credit tariff http://phone-shop.tesco.com/tesco-mo...reecredit.aspx This means that a £10 topup gives £20 extra free for 30 days to use on whatever you prefer to use it on. I usually topup by £20 which gives me £40 free, then for each of the subsequent months for my smartphone I then will buy a £5 text bundle with the original topup balance and sometimes a £5 data bundle if required . So £20 lasts me about 5 months. It all depends on what your wife actually wants to do. I spent a long time researching all the available tariffs and because I make almost zero calls, mostly text and occasionally want to use the internet the Tesco PAYG ones were best....for me. Paying a monthly fee makes no sense for someone like me. Your wife's mileage may vary.

I'm on a £30 a month contract with Orange that expires soon, currently they give me 500mb data, 300mins and unlimited texts. I never use more than 100mb data, probably send around 100-200 texts and use around 200 mins so am thinking overpaying with Orange (got a bit blinded by getting a shiny new smartphone on a 24 month contract though to be fair I got £180 cash back over all making the contract cost me about £520 which wasn't too bad considering back then the phone to buy outright would of cost over £400) though not sure what would suit me best I just know I can pay less for my usuage.

go for something with the best of both worlds, such as giffgaff.
cheap pay as you go costs........ or monthly bundles starting at £5 if you require. |

I was thinking of giffgaff but also read some bad things about them. Their £10 a month deal seems great value and ideal for my usuage.
