Bargain Hunt's David Harper. Feel Rather Sorry For Him.

My Friend sent me this link earlier.

Poor David Harper, I'm sure he didn't mean to offend David Barby's family.

In his defence, he appeared to be very sad about his co-stars death and how many non medical people know the difference between a Stroke and a Brain haemorrhage anyway ?

John Barrowman appeared on the show?

Was enjoying seeing David Barby on Antique's roadtrip last week.

From what I can gather David Harper and David Barby were filming Antiques Road Trip just a few days before David Barby suffered a brain haemorrhage.

I don't know when these shows will get aired, if at all.

I'm sure Harper was just repeating what he'd been told about the cause of death. I seem to remember that a stroke was being quite widely reported at the time.

At least Harper made a public declaration of his sorrow at the passing of Barby. As the sort of Godfather and public face of most of the programmes which featured Barby, I'd kind of expected - perhaps unreasonably - that Wonnacott might have prefaced the next broadcast edition of Bargain Hunt with a short mention, especially as I think they had the weekend to organise it. It wasn't forthcoming, though.

I don't think that any shows featuring him have been shown since he died.

Has anyone else noticed Mark Stacey looks very similar to David. I didnt realise it wasent the same person when they appeared together on bargain Hunt.

How often do they air the new series.

Its been a standing joke between then for many years that David was Mark's Father.
I did wonder how David Harper seemed to know that David had died, the BBC removed a thread on their POV message board that had been started because it hadn't been verified!

I think David Harper got the news out to alot of people who wouldn't otherwise have known via Twitter.

I don't think his name needed to be mentioned at all in the Huffington Post correction.

The show with Barrowman was filmed for Children in Need

Oh, what a shame, he seemed a nice guy.

Myself, I wouldn't be 'upset' at such a slight error in cause of death, more pleased that someone was posting their sympathies - but we all react differently to tragedy, I appreciate.

I know Richard o Brien did a charity show for them and was glad he won. Who was his opponent?

From the original link -

CORRECTION: David Barby's friend Jenny Youldon has emailed The Huffington Post UK to correct David Harper's statement. She said: "David Harper is incorrect, David Barby did not pass away from a stroke. It was a brain haemorrhage. His family have been upset by this error."

Harpers post is entirely correct. Barby suffered a 'stroke' and died 10 days later just as he said. Also as far as I know 'stroke' is a generic term for a brain haemorrhage. If there's an error it's with Jenny Youlden.

As someone said earlier, it is only a minor detail, but if it has upset his family then fair enough make a correction. I just don't see why David Harper had to be brought into it ???

I bet the poor bloke feels awful !

There aren't any scheduled yet, either, and that's why there hasn't been an on-air tribute yet.

Old repeats of Bargain Hunt have been shown every weekday since Barby's death, and as the news was released on a Friday it would not have been impossible to put together a bit of a tribute before the following Mondays show, even though it was a repeat.

The next new series may be months away. If they were going to wait until then they may as well not bother - not that I think they're going to, now.

I didn't say no editions of Bargain Hunt had been shown since David Barby died. I replied to your comment about no editions featuring David Barby having been shown since he died, and how that was the reason there's been no tribute to him. They are not going to pay tribute to Mr Barby with an edition he doesn't feature in. They'll pay a tribute when (or if) they next broadcast an edition he features in.

They wouldnt do a new series that quick as Bargain Hunt seems to be on every week of the year so probably is repeats.

What a silly thing to get upset about in public. Why add that barbed line to make him feel bad about a trivial mistake. I would think they should be upset about his death not that.

Exactly, I'd be more annoyed at the BBC, there's still no proper tribute on the Bargain Hunt and Flog It websites !

Not so. Both programmes have their much respected colleague David Barby very much in their thoughts.

A tribute on the Bargain Hunt website http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006nb9z

and on the Flog It website

I have seen them, but I thought they were only "Temporary" as it says "There will be a fuller tribute in due course", maybe I'm being too picky, expecting the tributes sooner.

As for his colleagues having David in their thoughts, was never questioned by me.

The point of this thread was to address what I believe was unfair treatment of David Harper, via the Huffington Post correction and I'm sorry if I caused offence to anyone at the BBC.

However if you read the David Barby RIP thread in full, you will see people were expecting and wanting tributes to David 3 weeks ago and some were disappointed with the way the BBC handled things.

Which brings me back to David Harper, if he hadn't broke the news on Twitter, many people would not have heard of David Barby's death and probably still wouldn't know.

This was put on the Facebook Flog It page earlier:

Many of you have been asking how the BBC are going to pay tribute to David Barby. Special tribute editions of the antiques series David was involved with are currently being prepared and will be shown week commencing Monday 1st October. We hope these will be a fitting tribute to a much missed and respected friend and colleague.
