Utterly Pathetic Solicitor(s)

My girlfriend's just been out with her mates, one of whom works in London for a firm of solicitors as a secretary. She (her friend) got a text from her boss, whose wife also works at the same place, they are both partners. They are going away on holiday on Monday and the bloke told my girlfriend's mate by text this morning (Saturday) to make sure she cancelled the milk whilst he is on holiday.

No, not the work milk, but the milk delivery at the house he shares with his wife.

My gf was gobsmacked and told her friend that they were surely having a laugh, and said that the friend looked very embarrassed and insulted.

Bloody pathetic useless overpaid wastes of spaces if you ask me!

lol sorry, I don't see what the problem is.

So what if they asked her to cancel their milk delivery? Lord the AUDACITY! Next they'll be asking her to file documents!

I absolutely hate solicitors with a passion. Except the ones I have used and that's only if they win and even then begrudgingly.

Scum the lot of em. Your GF should have told him to go f*** himself.

He should not be texting her on a non-working day to sort something out in his personal life that's nothing to do with her.

He texted the woman who was in Sheffield from his own house in London to cancel his own milk!

has no one watched 'Suits', the secretaries there have to do lots more than just cancel the milk.

Maybe he gets on well with his secretary and feels like he can ask her to do things like this without any awkwardness.

Or maybe he's just a bone-idle prick.

Who knows!

There's some right crappy bosses around isn't there? I can't for the life of me imagine my boss doing that it's just not kinda a normal thing to do. Why wouldn't he do that himself? Or is he a bit of a thick or something!

I still don't see the problem? lol

If your girlfriend's friend has a problem, it's up to her to "defend" herself against this grave injustice!

Why are you outraged on her behalf?

Meanwhile, in the 21st century, secretaries should not be contacted on their day off to sort out the personal affairs of whoever they work for.

I'm not outraged. I just think it is "beyond the call of duty" and rather bizarre.

Probably doing it because he can. Face it, the woman won't complain, and he'll have satisfied his need to be able to order her around and get away with it.

Fortunately, people like that are becoming less and less in the working world, but it saddens me when I hear about it still happening.

How are we to be sure she isn't a personal secretary?

I'd be livid too OP.

lol my parents are Lawyers themselves and they do that sort of thing all the time.

It's not your place to know the working relationship between other people.

My mom's secretary used to pick me up from School. She never saw herself as a slave, and I respect her very much up till this day.

So chill yourself.

because that's what secretaries are good for. Making calls, arranging meetings, making contacts

An employee should not be contacted out of hours for non-urgent non-work related matters.

OP states that the girl to whom this happened was embarrassed and insulted, leading one to assume that the working relationship does not extend into personal life.

The lazy solicitor could easily have performed such a simple task themselves. However, having worked around these sorts of people, many of them refuse to even answer their own phone, so this sort of behaviour does not surprise me in the least.
